Default Foam backgrounds

I am starting on a 75g tank this weekend and I am stuggling with what to do with the background. I tried great stuff pond foam and the regular yellow great stuff but they just came out to look like rows of poop so I just used cocofiber. The frogs don't seem to like the fiber that much because they get caught up in it. How do you guys get your foam backgrounds to look so good and natural looking?

What i did is just every once in a while i hold the can in the same spot for a few seconds while im spraying in the background, that way it kinda creates a weird looking blob every so often...

hope that helps

You could carve it.

It should expand enough to not look entirely like rows of poop, but you want to usually use more than you need, then carve it back to the shape you want.

What I did as well was to put on one layer, let it sit for a while to firm up a bit and then put on another layer, then a 3rd if you want it really built up. Then I carved it a bit with a knife. When you put the silicone over that and the cocobedding, it didn't look anything like lines of poop...

I find that if you hold the nozzle close to the glass and make the foam "poof out" and more flat, it expands better than just laying down rows. Kind of hard to explain

Yep.... take a knife to that bad boy... I have even used the foam to make the rough shapes I needed and then once cured just take a knife to it to make the final shaping. Also, instead of using just silicone and coco fiber to cover the background, I mix in a little orchid bark and spagnum as well.

That and carving is how this:

Turned into this:
