Default substrate mesh

Im putting down a layer of hydroballs and then soil(the fine coco husk) on top. I see zoomed and exo terra both make a substrate mesh to separate the layers, but they don't sell them at my petstores. Is there any reason I can't use the mesh I use in my flower beds to block weeds? Or any other suggestions for something available typically at the store? Thanks

You can use weedblocker but it doesn't drain that well. I use fiberglass window screen from my home improvement store.

I've used "weed block" in all my tanks without issues....for what it's worth....

I have read lots of posts on this forum about people having trouble with drainage when using weed blocker, but I have never used it. (erik s, I am glad it has worked for you!) Fiberglass window screen has always worked flawlessly for me, as well.

On a different topic, you might want to consider a different substrate than straight coco husk. It will not have much in the way of nutrients for plants, if you are planning on planting them in the substrate itself. You might search for ABG mix on this forum. You will have trouble sourcing the tree fern fiber, but the mix will work without it, it just probably won't last a decade as it can with tree fern fiber.

Good luck!

Mark

I only use abg mix and I LOVE it. It's all I use.

Thanks Mark..I will look into that. I'm upgrading my frogs from a 20gal to a large exo-terra terrarium.
