Default My attempt at Clay Mushrooms

I have made some of my own mushrooms following Grimm's guide and thought I`d share what I did. I also tried out some other fungi like Scarlet elf's cup (tree mushroom) and Chanterelles. I made them out of polymer clay and painted with acrylics. I really like how they turned out but I have to give it to Grimm for the post he made.

This picture is using glow in the dark polymer clay not glow in the dark paint. Although after testing, I found out that the paint makes the clay look as if it doesn't glow.

The orange and red attempt of the original idea

The chanterelle attempt

And the Scarlet Elf's Cups

I am also thinking of trying to make some blue mushrooms
Chlorociboria sp.

Great job on those. Much nicer than my attempt. What brand of polymer did you use?

I tried out Sculpey Premo and Fimo professional. Premo was too soft for me and was a fingerprints magnet. While Fimo was stiffer and more pleasant for me to use, but keep in mind that its harder on the hands.

I HAVE to try these...love them...wonder if the frogs would use the "cups" for deposit sites?? Went on line and saw that the material is easy to find...wonder how you color them....and they probably do not need to be fired I assume...

Judy, it comes in various colors. Check out your local crafts store. You bake it in your oven.

I might put them on the market for sale but I live in Bulgaria, so the shipping would probably be a little extra.
The solid color ones like epiphytes etc. said, are colored polymer clay. While for the Scarlet elf's cups I used acrylic paint, but i would advise a good sturdy sealant for amphibians and aquariums like polyurethane resin or epoxy resin. Polymer clay is a PVC plastic and should be sealed.

Polymer clay is quite toxic. you should not use it around frogs.

As you have told me before, the polymer clay should be encapsulated in a resin and i offered non toxic resins like polyurethane and epoxy. I am following your advice as you are a polymer clay artist and definitely know more than me

Terrific job! For the life of me, I can't find any glow in the dark clay in any of the craft stores in my city...

I wasnt really directing it at you....it was more of a general statement.

your mushrooms look really great by the way. Its making me really excited to get back to my silicone mushroom project. I will hopefully have time to get back to it in the next few weeks. I have a whole bunch of different mushrooms sculpted its just a matter of getting the time to mold and cast them.

Look for Fimo Effects - that's what i used. I think Sculpey and Premo have some as well. But if you want a bright glow just use glowing paint and seal it. It blows the clay out of the water - brighter and longer lasting glow.

I hope I'm not highjacking this thread but I have a related question. I'm trying to build some of these myself and I know that the Sculpey has been recommend many times but also cautioned as not being good for frogs. I know that when used, it should be sealed so I'm wondering if an acrylic sealer is good enough or does it need to be a resin sealer? Any recommendations on brand that i can buy locally? How many coats would I need? Lastly, if I did not use the polyclay stuff, is there anything that can be used that's safer that doesn't need to be fired in a kiln? I know all the air dry stuff isn't waterproof.

Is this stuff any different / better than polymer clay? It says it's an epoxy. Is it waterproof?

Generally acrylic sealants are non toxic, but always check what you buy as with anything else.
I think resin sealers are more durable but also more expensive. Polyurethane is usually better, because its very thin, while epoxy has a very thick consistency. Although some companies make epoxy specifically for that job. Check the label on the product for number of coats, but i'd guess 3 would do the job.
I haven't given much researched to Apoxie since it's not available here in Bulgaria but its labeled as non-toxic.
I am sure Milliput is safe as I asked them directly (they replied quickly), but should be washed after it cures.
Generally epoxy clays are safe, but keep in mind that's for the cured product. That stuff is also really strong, significantly more durable than polymer clay. For me painting (though I don't have artist grade thick paint) the clay is harder and that's where the polymer clay gets a bonus with all its colors. Btw it air dries and its waterproof .

I can't recommend any products since I am from Bulgaria and i don't really know what your shops got laying around. Most famous brands are easy to find around the forums. Btw check small stores, hardware shops and so on. You might find a cheap alternative. But as i said previously in the message, always check the product your buying. If you feel concerned, stick to the mainstream stuff.

I hope this helps
