Question about racks...

i want to set up a rack with 15gal verts, and from what i can find it seems like even though the racks are 4', and the tanks are 1', i'll still only be able to fit 3 per shelf b/c of the rack posts and tank frames. it kinda stinks because i want to maximize my space but it looks like i'll have 11" left over on each shelf.

anybody know of any 4' racks that will actually fit 4 tanks?

i've been looking around and i really like the looks of this kind. i have a lot of black in my room so the black and wood would look nice. pretty cheap with a decent load limit. just don't know what i'd do with the extra 11". only thing i don't like is it's 2' deep, i'd rather it be about 16"-18", but those only come on the 3' racks i think.

my opinion would be to go with 15H verts they are only 10" wide so you can indeed fit four per shelve, the better ratio of land and vert space of the 15H compared to a 15L when used as a vert tank seems to be better utilized by most frogs as well. just my .02 cents

that stinks because i just got an incredible deal on 15 longs. i think the longs offer more usable space for the frogs (the back wall would have 300sq.in. for planting/climbing as opposed to 200sq.in.), but they obviously don't work as nicely on the racks. too bad i couldn't get the same deal on highs. looks like i'm stuck with 3 per shelf? that extra space is gonna drive me nuts. too bad they don't make 3.5' or 4.5' racks. :(

Go to Home Depot or Lowes. In the lumber section they sell a kit to build either a work bench or a shelf system. It is about 30 bucks or so. The kit is made by Simpson, Strong Tie Product. The kit is to be used with 2x4's which would be more than strong enough for a lot of tanks. They also sell the same type of brackets in a smaller size as well, to be used with smaller lumber.

I agree with JLB...why not go with the tank(s) that you want and then build a rack system around them...that way you are happier with the outcome and in turn the frogs happier with their new home
i think what most people have a hard time with is making it look nice. it's probably not going to look like you paid a trip to ikea.

I recently came across the same issue... I found 4 Oceanic Lizard Lounges for $10 each on craigslist. The tanks are roughly 25Wx17Hx18D. Obviously, two wouldn't fit on a four foot shelf... I went with the 2x4 DIY method. I certainly looks very utilitarian, but I'm more interested in looking at the frogs than the shelf. It's 5ft wide, by two feet deep. There are two shelves for tanks, and one for supplies. It should do nicely for my (soon to be) frog room.

Speaking of Ikea, I checked and you could put together a pretty nice rack using their Ivar shelving system. It is kinda pricey, not as bad as the stuff from the container store. Shelves hold up to 99lbs. and you can keep adding more sides as your collection grows. Ikea says they come unfinished and may be painted, stained, or sealed.

Just a little info...

Sides of shelving: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/73755709
$20 each, 20"deep x 89" tall

Shelves: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30095030
$12 each, 33"wide x 20" deep

They also come in 12" depths as well. Here is a complete shelving kit: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S49824326

Hope this helps.
