Default Which Pumilio to get

I mainly have ranitomeya species and love their size. I don't like the bigger frogs like tincs or such. I have not yet had the opportunity to have pumilio. Two species I am looking at are escudo and esperanza. I know that escudo are really little ( I have retics and love their size) and that both can be reds or blues (which I like).

How big are the esperanza?

I wanted to get your thoughts and experiences with these types of pumilio

Thanks!

I am also interested in pumilio advice. What ones are not shy? My blue jeans tend to hide all the time and I am interested in finding a bold variety. Any suggestions? How bold are esperanzas?

Esperanza's are decent size, about the same as a Cristobal, Basti's and Rio Teribes were the boldest Pums I ever had, the Rio Branco's are pretty bold for me as well and about the same size as the Basti/Cristobal type.

Bastis are my favorite, but need time to bold up. The cristobals always seem to be active for me.

I agree: Cristobal are very bold. Esperanza has same size of Solarte.

I do not think I ever had a pumilio that was shy. They are little bull dogs. I would go with a pair of Cayo de Agua or Bastiamento. Good luck deciding either way!

Any courting pums are bold, so try to get a pair.

They also have a lot individual personality, I have some female Esperanza that hide a lot, but also males that are out all the time.

Generally I agree that El Dorados and Christobals are great for starters. my Esperanzas, Rio Brancos and Salt Creeks are personal favorites. Don't have bastis, but the salties are close.

I was surprised how small the Escudos are when I received a pair and wouldn't recommend for a starter.

I have about 10 morphs of pumilio, Rio Teribe were by far the boldest. But most of my pumilio can be seen throughout the day. You wont be disappointed. I have to say almost all my Pumilio are out all day

Well I must be the only loser here....my El Dorados (my only pumilios) are rarely visible! I like them, but they are just a bit reclusive.

If your ok with retics I dont see why you wouldnt be ok with escudo. They were my first pum and byfar still my favorite. They started out very bold but have just recently went into hiddeing. It may be because they have tads there careing for. If you want a large bold pu I'd agree bastis &nd cristos are a good choice. With both my males are very bold and call right at me sometimes like there a barking dog. But everyones frogs are different depending on the situation. So whatever you get give the plenty of space it seems to bring them out.

In addition to the above, my Solarte male is my bolder frog (with Varadero), but Cristos are always out and about.

I've posted pictures of most of these morphs here https://www.facebook.com/FrogWhisperer , up close and also in vivs, and you can get an idea of their size, colors, boldness from the pics I think easily.

I think you should stick with the old adage "keep what you like" though, and not try and 'force it' b/c we recommended one over the other.

Look at the FTS's also, to get an idea of what a pumilio viv should be set up like.

Best,

Blue Jeans and Darklands can be shy by reputation. At least in some groups/settings, and IME.

Esperanza are more bold then Darklands with a very similar look. Same with Cauchero [bigger frog].

Almirante, Man Creek, even Vulture Point have a similar 'look' to Blue Jeans but are more active IME.

Then again, "Keep what you like/enjoy"

Shawn,

Here is the tank, overxposed, an 18x18x24 with a probable 1.1 Lighting is an LED fixture I built and it is humid. The glass is always covered in condensation even though I've installed a large screen vent at the top.

I'm welcome to any helpful suggestion. And I've been meaning to add something over the panel in the back...one day!

That will work

I would consider moving the 2 'tropical' plants in the front out.

Both will outgrow the tank very fast.

And I'd add 2 more bromeliads

Perhaps 2 of the 'terrestrial' varieties you see at the big box stores...

I agree with Shawn, remove the big plants from the front.

But instead of more broms, I'd just leave a little open area with leaf litter and some film canisters to encourage foraging.

I have used billbergia in a few of my vivs both Poquito Mas and blanco.... That is a nice plant but you wont want one that is blooming...Check ebay some great billbergia there. I have had quite a few Ranitomeya come out of water in billbergia.
