Default O.H.Bullseye

Picked up my very first Histrionica today, 1.1 Bullseye. Moved them to the 100x50x50cm (former benedicta)tank. Feels like a new chapter in the hobby for me, could not be more excited to work with these frogs!

some quick pictures I was able to take :

I was absolutely amazed by how almost all Histrionica that ive seen today had such vivid colors! It is almost like their spots or paterns shine light.
I honestly must say these were the most beautifull frogs i had ever seen!

Bahia solano by far my favorite! I hope i am able to get my hands on these in the future.

Found 2 eggs on the tip of a bromeliad. They don't look fertilized, but these just made my day!

Noticed the female returning to a filmcanister that contains a small clutch of 3 eggs for a few days now. Today I was able to see the eggs for the first time and look pretty good. Hopefully I get to see some tadpoles in a few weeks.

Thank you for the simpathy.

yes, propbably stress due too long travel and change of tanks 3 times in 1 week.

Before buying , the seller also discussed this with me and he knew there was a possibility these frogs could have a difficult time to recover. The female looks 100% healthy now (and also when i purchased her), but the male staid more skinny but I saw no harm... You can also see on the pictures the male was not extreme skinny or something like that. The problem was he only had this 100% sure male. He had 3 more, but they are almost sure female. So that was another reason to take this male.

Ofc ,I just contacted the seller and he imediatly agreed to replace the male for free, I hope to have a new male next month.

Still sucks to lose this beautifull specimen.

What a blow, so sorry. Given the weight issue that you were aware of before purchase, did you do any sort of testing or quarantine upon receiving the frogs? Will you do a necropsy on the male that died?

After purchased no, since my friend (seller) already placed all the histrionica he received in quarantine. All the histrionica he purchased came from a friends of his own personal collection. I also did not want to bother the frogs with more stress by handling or changing of tanks, so I put the frogs directly in their tank. All my tanks are also no connected, so there is no danger for contamination.

My friend asked to give him the male back so I froze it. I guess he wants do a necropsy on it.

Freezing will destroy too much of the cellular structure of the frog and any present pathogens to make it useful for that purpose. Brief refrigeration is the only option to temporarily preserve specimens for that type of exam.

Sorry to hear it, Tijl. In a grim coincidence, I also lost a Bullseye a couple of days ago. Mine was totally preventable, though. It was in a plastic bin because I was trying out a different combination of pairing. I left 2 in the main enclosure and moved this other one out to a temporary enclosure. I just didn't get the lid back on properly after a feed and mine escaped. This stuff happens in the hobby, but it's still a punch in the gut.

In the meanwhile I introduced 2 Neoregelia "hannibal lecter" to the tank. The females has been checking them out non-stop for the last 2 days now. So much fun to watch her behavior!

I feel with you since I also seem to have lost my breeding male this week

he had a seizure and was lying on his stomach when another male jumped on him (which I immediately separated into another thank).

btw guessing from the make of your tank I guess you're from Europe?

Sad to hear man... I'm glad you still have other male(s) left, but losing an animal is always hard. I recently read an older article (2010) published by Fred Vosse about his experience with Histrionica in Colombia and his research states that females can be pretty difficult in terms of choosing a male to breed with. So I hope Your other male(s) is able to please the misses Bull.

Yes, I live in Belgium. What gives it away?

I'm realy counting the days now, 13 left until I receive my new male!

I also added a petri dish filled with clay in the tank. Got the clay from a friend who uses it for all his big oophaga.

Gorgeous frog, Tijl. When you say a 'bath' -- what form is the clay in? Do you have a photo of the dish?

Thanks!

I mixed it with water and let the clay dry for a day until it cracked. Now looks like this :

I just said he took a "bath" because i don't know the correct words to describe it in english. It's not like he is covered in the clay or something like that. He just sits in the dish for a few minutes, than proceeds hunting for bugs or whatever he wants. It looks like he is familiar with this clay, but I can't say for sure.
