Default New 'Branco' pair :)

Hi everyone,

New guy here :P

On friday I received a pair of adult Oophaga Pumilio 'Branco'. They are my first Pumilio and i absolutely adore them to bits

Just a few questions brought on by new owner worry syndrome!

I have yet to hear the male call and was wondering how long it can take before he feels comfortable to call? in my experience male darts tend to call almost as soon as they enter the viv and establish some territory.

Also, is it normal for one dart to spend the majority of their time sitting in bromeliads/hiding out of sight whilst the other forages in the leaf litter? Is the one that sits about likely to be the male guarding territory? :P

I see the active one whenever i mist the tank but i haven't seen the other one in two days :/

Anyway, here are some pics sorry about the poor quality but i only have a phone camera!

(p.s one of the pictures is the viv only, don't expect to see any frogs in there haha)

It is my understanding that one of the reasons that Rio Brancos are difficult to sex is that the males do not call as actively as other pumilios.

It is not unusual for one frog to hide and the other be active. I have had it both ways. Sometimes the male hides up in the broms and I only see him when he calls, but usually it is the female that hides out while the male is more active.

Congrats, beautiful frogs. There are a lot of females floating around out there...did you specify it was a sexed pair? Otherwise a pair is just two. I learned that the hard way lol.

Thanks guys, they are indeed beautiful and they are a guaranteed sexed pair! The seller is the UKs most respected Dart Frog Dealer :P (Marc from dartfrog.co.uk)

Still not seen the smaller, brighter male since Saturday but I always see the female pop out of the leaf litter for a bit when I mist. Here's hoping I see him soon. Hate fearing the worst haha. I've also yet to see them feed but I suppose they are still settling in and the tank is very heavily seeded with springs and woodlice
