Talking Hoya-oholic Turned Viv Addicted

Hello all! Texas newbie... I have grown over a hundred different species of Hoya over the last ten to twelve years and I have just now discovered the insanely beautiful and addictive art of vivarium keeping... as a means to keep my H. imbricata, undulata, and H. sp. aff. caudata 'Sumatra' happy. I'm trying to soak up as much knowledge as I can because I would like to create even more unique backgrounds and work my way up to frogs.

My first tank was created from a basic 10 gallon with an egg crate bottom, a few mounted cork pieces setting against the back, and a piece of driftwood with a modest amount of moss... All the plants in the tank are potted in my fast draining soilless Hoya mix and orchid pots. Pretty basic.

My second build was two vertical 10 gallons with hardscaping, false bottom, micro-fauna... and I branched out to marcgravia, begonias, neoregelia, and a miniature orchid... along with several Hoya.

Cheers~
Sara

Thank you! I'm really happy with how they turned out... although, I wish I had the moxie to go bigger in the beginning, or even created a full 20 gallon. I love having the two separate verticals, for visual appeal, but they are very limiting plant wise.

My goal is to start a 36x16x36 towards the end of the year. Hopefully I will gain some tips for success from the forum!

Do you have suggestions for hoya's that would do well in a humid vivarium setting?

Honestly, I’m surprised more people don’t try Hoya in their tropical set ups! They are epiphytes and adore humidity, detest soggy roots. I’m pretty much ignored (Hoya wise) in the Terrarium and Vivarium groups I follow. I would try more varieties, but I’m limited to smaller space.
I have grown the following in 75%-85% humid tanks (75-90 degrees) for the last 1-2 years:
H. imbricata
H. caudata
H. undulata
H. wayetii
H. davidcumingii
H. eliptica (loves humidity but not the high light)
H. heuschkeliana
H. ‘Rebecca’
Really want to try:
H. waymaniae (loves heat)
H. mindorensis
H. mitrata (gets big, loves heat)

Your vivs are inspiring. Thanks for the plant list. I picked up a hoya recently, which got me thinking what other's would be appropriate.

Great imbricata! I love that species if mine ever start growing at even a moderate pace I’ll be happy.

Right?! Ha! My H. imbricata green form has started growing a few vines... I was over the moon! It took my first imbricata a YEAR!

AND my original imbricata has two new big, fat, fully-cupped leaves grasping onto my driftwood!

I converted two 10 gallon tanks... the lids were made by I Heart Geckos. And thanks!
