Question New Member Requirements

Greetings Friends.

I am a new member and I am trying to meet my requirements to gain access to the boards full capabilities. I know what is required of me, however, I am curious what people think about the new member requirements that DB has. Do you guys think it is beneficial to the community to weed out scammers by having introductory restrictions? Or do you guys think that it makes the forum inaccessible to newcomers who genuinely want to participate in the forum? I personally think it is a little bit of both, but all in all I think DB is better off having less members who are more serious and invested as opposed to more members who don't care as much about the hobby.

Default Re: New Member Requirements

Other specialty forums have shut down entirely due to scammer overload (, likely more I don't know about).

I don't think that the requirements "makes the forum inaccessible to newcomers who genuinely want to participate in the forum". Newcomers can't post classified ads, and I think that is good. This is a discussion forum first, not a classified site.

If you search the site for "new member requirements" you'll get a taste of the discussion that has gone on in the past on this topic. That's another good reason to rein in newcomers for a little bit: to get them to use the search function lest every single newcomer asks the same twelve questions over and over and over and over again.

The "hey, you can search here for that" comment comes up a lot in these new introduction threads, and I think that is good. If not for this opportunity to explain to folks that there is in fact a way to search the archives, this forum would be nothing but fifteen thousand postings of "how many X's can I put in a viv X big?", and if we wanted that, we could just go over to Facebook.

<rant off>

And: Welcome!!

I think I could turn and live with animals, they are so placid and self-contain'd.
