Default Complete Noobie from South Florida

Hi Gang,

I don't have a habitat or any frogs yet. I'm here to do some research and see what all is involved in this hobby so I know what I'll be getting myself into before I commit.

Lot of information here, it will take me awhile to work my way through it.

First question would be, what do you all think about the starter vivarium kits form a place like Josh's Frogs? Would this be a good starting point for a beginner or are there better options?

It looks prety good. I based my tank build off of their thumbnail kit, but some things can be swapped if you prefer something else. Like you could go with an egg crate false bottom or incorperate live moss vs the spagnum. Maybe use tropical springtails instead of temperate (but I only have experience with tropical springtails). You do still need fruit fly cultures and supplements because it doesn't look like its included. Maybe a heat pad if you keep your place very cold like I do. Take this with a grain of salt because I do not have frogs yet, I am currently raising tadpoles, so I can't be certain.

I did not use their kits to do my build but I did buy several plants from them. The plants all came in in excellent condition and are doing well. I also bought a starter fruit fly culture and media from them. I have started several cultures from that one and all are doing well. So my experience with Josh's frog has been good.

Hello there fellow South Floridian! What part do you live in? I am in Cutler Bay which is near Miami.

The kits Josh’s Frogs and NEherp sell are ok, but I would rather buy my materials separately.

Welcome!

Could you put your location in your profile, please? Then we can all take into account where you live when discussing your concerns; much of the husbandry issues with darts are affected by local climate.

I've not used those kits, but I do know that Josh's Frogs is a reliable and respected vendor. I'm with Eiffel on putting together the viv according to my own plan, but to each her own.

I used a kit from Neherp. I found that it had more than I needed for a single build, so I did the logical thing and built more.

I would do your best to connect with some local froggers. They will be knowledgeable about what is available locally (save on shipping) and the specific husbandry issues. GL
