Question Hello and a question about water.

Hello, this is my second time trying to post this introduction.

I have 4 Azureus Dart frogs and a corn snake. I did have 5 Azureus but due to the slum I have been living in not caring if their tenants have proper working air conditioners the viv got too hot a couple weeks back and one of my Azureus died before I could get the temp in the viv down. We made sure to give him every chance to recover but he never revived. he was almost 4 years old.

We had just put down a deposit on a better apartment when we found him dead. We move in the 16th of August. we have plans to set up a Sweater box quarantine in the new place and tear down the viv and put the plants in quarantine with the frogs. then replace the ABG and make any repairs to the viv before we set up the frogs in it. I have plans to order from josh's frogs for ABG and other supplies as soon as we are ready to set up in the new place.

I have an important question about water. we do not have access to an RO system we have always had to used bottled water. some say you should only use distilled water and other sources say distilled will cause fatal bloating. Plus my husband wants to save water from the viv to keep the established bacteria and algae. Does anyone have an idea what would be best for my frogs?

We were also having trouble keeping decent fly cultures for a while and had to switch from Melanagaster to Hydi as we had our usual rescue culture supplier go out of business and had to go to a new place that had the Hydi. they are the same place the local aquarium goes to if their supply of cultures for their dart frog exhibit runs low.

Yeah I am rambling but I believe that this will help you to understand me better.

Ro or distilled are both fine.

Bacteria isn't in your water it's attached to things like filter media, rocks, wood, etc etc.

Fruit flies I end up ordering but my local petco does sell some sorry Mel cultures though if need be

If your having trouble with cultures. It's probably due to not using multiple flies from multiple cultures to seed with. Unless you're using some crazy media or something.

There's a fruit fly genetics thread around here some where (thanks ed). It explains it in more depth. This was the game changer for me. Using flies adapted to different stages of cultures.

I am pretty sure the problems with heat and cold in the apartment have been a huge contribution to the culture failure. The started having issues about the time our furnace broke this winter and continued till through to the The weather suddenly went hot and the air conditioner was not working. now the air conditioner is doing better and the cultures seem to be doing better. I will tell my husband that it is better to simply start over with fresh distilled water. we will be keeping the same clay balls in the viv just replacing the substrate barrier and putting in fresh ABG. I also hope to replace the misting heads.

Thanks, LadyBug

Does your local aquarium sell RO water? I have a local pet shop that in the back of their aquarium section has an area that will fill your bucket/bottle with RO water/salt water. They only charge $.35 a gallon so I always keep a reserve on hand for my mistking.

I have never asked though the one place I dealt with did not and the new place we have to deal with is a little far to go unless I stock it in large quantities and I don't have the storage space.
