Default Seeking in KS an Auratus Panama Blue and Black tadpole

I had a recent tragedy yesterday and you can read about it in my new member introduction. I still feel absolutely horrible.
Anyway, I originally obtained both of my tads from DFS at a trade show in Kansas City and was curious if there's anybody knew of any other Tads around that I might be able to raise as a friend for Rooster? He just popped his back legs and I was hoping to at least have a pair in my vivarium.

Also, Question. I know that the breed should not be intermixed, but can all Auratus live together? Or just the subspecies of them [ie Panama Blue and Black] ?

They aren't 'breeds', and there are no subspecies of Dendrobates auratus.

That said, if you do mix morphs (i.e. color variants of the species) or morphologically distinct locales (i.e. frogs that descend from known collection locations), you must cull any eggs that they may produce. Not all folks can stomach that, especially in the excitement of a first batch of eggs.

If you produce mixed morph frogs, you will not be welcome in most corners of the hobby. The dart frog hobby is one that has not been tainted by designer animals, and many folks will defend that situation rabidly (myself included).

So, it is far and away the best practice not to mix morphs.

I'll repeat that for clarity: do not mix morphs.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I wasn't sure of the correct terminology nor exactly how the Dendrobatidae family tree worked. Interesting classification read on wiki.

I completely understand about cross breeding morphs. That's why I asked. (Again, still learning and will probably use the wrong terminology, but...) I wasn't sure how pure the species line was kept and how far up/down the classifications family was kept pure and true. I think its amazing how dedicated everyone is to keeping it pure! So, technically I could house two males from the same locale in a 39 long but breeding is a big fat no-no. Gotcha! *wink* No mixing morphs.

How big is the pdf hobby? I've been a reptile geek for years. My first tattoo was a green lizard on my back. Only mentioned it cuz it seems like I've only heard about pdfs as pets within the past few years.
