Default Ranitomeya Benedicta Calling

WooHoo! Benedicta finally started getting at it!. As far as I know this is the first video of Benedicta calling that has been uploaded to youtube.

I apologize this one is not in HD but youtube has been taking over an hour to upload to when file size is that big (I think comcast is throttling me)

It took alot of begging to get some silence around this house but thankfully they kept at it for the past few hours.

I only got a 2 min window of quiet so this is the best I could get. Expect much better video in the future.

Sweet bud. I think thats the only clear benedicta call on the net. The only other one I have herd has a terrible sounding bird as the main chorous.

Its pretty quite eh... Just slightly faster paced then a vent call. I think that is the only downfall of Benedictas.

Sounds a lot like the R. variabilis call. Neat.

Was that an imi call I heard in the background?

If it was loud yea, probably either the varadero, vanzo's or C. Valley. They all sound alike.

You can also hear the Uakarii buzzing in response to the Benedicta. Got to turn the volume way up for that though.

If you are refering to the audio clip on dendrobates yes...it is a terrible sounding bird. Pisses my wife off when I play that audio clip trying to get them to call. Thankfully none of us need it anymore

Didn't find any eggs this morning but not really shocked. I am sure it will be any day now though!

My benedicta court for three days before laying eggs. They'll get to it. Once you get them going they won't stop.

For those of you who have them, how would you describe their temperament? Reclusive, shy, semi bold, bold, or extremely bold?

While some claim them to be extremly shy I find mine are semi bold and out quite often. I can always walk up to the tank and spot at least 2 of the 3. I find they are most active and bold after a good heavy misting.

Much to my surprise, mine have been fairly bold as well. What really surprises me is that when I open the tank for misting and feedings, they could care less. I can even stick my phone a couple inches from their face to take photos and they don't budge.

Expect a reclusive frog and hope for a semi-bold frog.

One of the reasons for the understanding that benedicta are shy is that they are fairly new (legally) to the US hobby and most people who purchase them purchase juveniles to save money. When your frogs reach adulthood (technically six months, but full size isn't usually reached until about ten months) and begin courting they come out much more. Some become quite bold when they get into a rhythm of breeding.

Great video and nice pictures. Did they lay in a horizontal cannister? How far from the ground do you have them at?

I think I will have to start making some videos considering I love going on youtube and watching videos just like yours.

Yea they are horizontal, probably about 20" up There's a group of 5 cans staggered in a group they like to hang out by.

Amazing!!! I new they were up to something! Hahaha

I really love the benedicta color, size, care level BUT I a couple of weeks ago I saw a small Oophaga that is called the escudo. I noticed the color was awesome, i would have a little variationin my collection, and I somewhat enjoy having a challenge. Also I heard that the escudo are alot bolder. So now I wait thinking which frog I have till I move out and my own.

Your benedicta are BEAUTIFUL!!! Your pics and visa are swaying me in there direction.
