Re: aquariums

First pick a size, and what you want to keep in it.

Id recommend the background of your choice and a substrate with a leca base over a false bottom. Then you can chose the rest of your substrate.

im not sure, i want probably anywhere from a 10g-30g. im probably getting a 20g though. i am going to keep a pair of azureus in there to try and breed. and i dont know what a leca base or a false bottom is.

Re: aquariums

Id recommend a 15gal standard or 20gal standard. Both offer a good amount of floor space.

Re: aquariums

Re: aquariums

Basically leca are little clay balls that people use for drainage. It will keep your substrate/dirt from staying too wet. All you do is dump them in and then place some screen on top of it to keep dirt from falling through.

Here's a pic of a 20 gallon tank I have with leca in it. Hope this will help you out a little more.

The screen is there to keep the dirt from falling through the leca and into the bottom. If you look in the care sheet and beginners sections, there are a bunch of stickied topics that talk about it and will help you out some more.

Re: aquariums

oh ok thanks, so where do u find the screen and leca? and what does the numbers like 1.1 Leucomelas
1.1 Azureus
2.2 Mancreek
1.0 Alanis
0.2? Powder Blue
too many babies mean?

GSXR_MURRHEE 01-02-2009 04:18 AM

Re: aquariums

The screen you can just get from a hardware store like home depot, lowes, or even ace hardware. The leca you can get from a hydroponics store (if you can find one), or order from one of the sponsors.

The numbers are for frogs I have - male.female.unknown

Re: aquariums

oh cool, so does it matter like what size screen? and on urs what does too many babies mean? lol

GSXR_MURRHEE 01-02-2009 04:30 AM

Re: aquariums

Not sure what you mean by size. The hole size doesn't really matter, as long as you cover all the leca with the screen so that your dirt doesn't fall through.

The too many babies- I was overrun a while back. All my frogs were laying eggs like crazy and it was getting to be a little too much. I had like 60 frogs and not enough room, lol.

Re: aquariums

oh ok ya i was just talking about the screen holes. dang! haha 60 babies? lol thats a lot. do you still have a lot of them? and what kinds were they

Re: aquariums

Lol, yeah it was a bit much, I had to start culling eggs until I sold the babies I had. I had a nice long break from tadpole duty. Now I'm starting to build back up again with leucs, azueus, and man creeks. I think right now I'm up to about 40, after selling a few here and there the past couple of months.

Re: aquariums

If you can't find lecca, you can also 'suspend' you vivarium floor with a true false bottom. Get five or six 3" tubes, put a sheet of 'eggcrate' (the white grid found in office light fixtures) on top of the tubes, then put your screen on that. When you are finished you can cover it with soil or wood chips as a substrate.

This makes a hollow cavity to collect water in. You can make a kind of sewer 'manhole' on the surface with a hidden cap on it to siphon the water out when it gets too full.
