Default First custom "background" - 10gal Aqueon tank.

I bought a cheap 10-gallon tank a while back to use as a quarantine tank, it'd been sitting empty for a while and I thought, I have this extra bottle of silicone and a can of great stuff in my cabinet, I should try a custom background... so I did, sorta!

Basically, I'm getting ready to start a new job and for the first time in my life I get my own office, my own desk, all that good stuff, so I thought I'd do a build in the 10gal tank where both long sides were viewing space and the short sides were the "background"s. I knew I needed to maximize space if I were ever to put an animal in there (still up in the air) so I searched my city and found this perfect piece of mostly hollow driftwood, wrapped a bend-a-branch around it, learned about using gloves with Great Stuff the hard way, and... finished the rest today! Pardon my reflection, it's a bit difficult to photograph this time of day.

And here's what it looked like when I was nearly done carving it:

It was a really great experience and I'm glad I did it... but I'm never doing it again while I live in a little apartment - the place is COVERED in dirt and foam and smelled SO BAD while the silicone was curing. I'm happy with how it came out, and I can't wait to see how it looks when the plants have had a change to grow in some and the bugs get a change to establish themselves.

Looks amazing!

If you have a balcony, could always do it on that in nicer weather?

Looks great! If it is for an office environment, what is their policy on fruit flies in the office? That may dictate whether you can do PDFs or not.

This came out really nicely. Thanks for posting. You did a great job.

I have to say that my favorite parts of this post are that in the first picture, the viv looks like it is wearing pants and in the second picture, it looks like there is a basement in the substrate/drainage layer where you can store things. Is that a stapler? +1 for posting optical illusion pics! :-)
