No, the hexes (sp?) both have false bottoms with gravel around the sides you can see. The floating plant in the water is duckweed. You can use a teaspoon full and have crap loads in no time. I use this pond to get it started on my new ponds. It keeps the water filtered and when I get too much...my fish love it for a snack.
