Default Vinarium - Dojō Terrarium

Vinarium - Dojō Terrarium

It's been a while since I did a setup journal!

I'm starting a new project here with my 65-gallon tank and a pretty specific concept in mind: a planting to feature botanically interesting vines. Among the vines/lianas are some really cool plants and I've started a list with selections to hunt for.

I got the enclosure emptied out after it was set up with a not very well-maintained aquarium planting. This tank has been around for a few years and most of the glass has a hazy etched blemish. I will have to spend a few hours polishing with cerium oxide to clear it up, but only the front. I'm not gonna worry about the rear panel and sides...

Here's one plant I have on-hand already for this project, a Freycinetia sp.. The foliage on this one is kind of big and coarse, but the vine is easy to prune to control spread...

More soon!

I’d love to see Lapageria in a tank.

That sounds like a good candidate! Thanks for the tip. It's off in its own obscure family, so it fits the bill as botanically interesting. It's also funny for being a monocot that grows like a vine. Do you think it could be pruned to control spread? I want to try to fit at least a dozen different plants in here.

It looks as though Lapageria is related to Smilax, which are also pretty interesting. I ordered some S. bona-nox seeds the other night, although I also read they are difficult to sprout. The foliage of this plant sometimes shows a unique mottling pattern...

This is kind of neat...

It doesn’t grow voraciously, but like many vines it would probably do better in a 90cm tall than a 60.

I'll probably try it from seed. There are a few cheap seed sources for it.

Look forward to seeing what you place in there. I'm a big vine fan myself, love email.

Keep pictures coming as it progresses 🙂

Cerium oxide can take scratches out of glass ? I'd like to learn more on this.
