Default First viv finished.

After lurking here and at DartDen for almost a year, I finally built my first tank. It's a 20 extra high, with the whole false bottom/great stuff setup. Right now it's all orchids except a mystery brom I got locally and an african violet at the bottom. I'll have a few more orchids as soon as I get back into town, maybe add a few cuttings to fill in the gaps between orchids, and replace that brom with something a little more frog friendly. I'm not sure what to keep in there since there's not a lot of floor space, but I'm thinking leucs would be nice, probably a pair.

Any comments or advice are welcome.

Nice job!

Be sure to post again once you've gotten your frogs.

Thanks for the comments. I had a blast building it, and I'm about to start on a 46 bowfront. I drew up the plans earlier tonight. I hope I'm not being too ambitious with the stream and waterfalls, but I think I can do it.

I remounted the cryptanthus. In the pictures, it was just balanced on top of the driftwood, but now I gave it a little sphagnum and tied it down. Hopefully it'll be happy there.

I'm not 100% happy with my lighting, and I'm tempted to replace it with a 70w metal halide. I like the idea of a point source light casting shadows, rather than the compact fluorescents just lighting everything up.

How much does the MH bulb raise the temp in the tank?

I'm using 2x 36w compact fluorescent now. If I do switch to MH I'll have to keep a close eye on temperatures. That's one thing I'm a little worried about.

wow, really nice. great orchids.
and lots of good climbing terrain. for that reason, i'd go with a more arboreal species (intermedius, etc.) rather than the terrestrial leucs.

my leucs rarely ever climb. like, never.
they'd end up hanging out under the african violet all day long.

Hey, it came out very well, you are right, there is almost no floor space, I would put a type of thumbnail in there. I would probley get intermedius, Imitator, or a pumilo.

don't be afraid to make a stream and waterfall just plan it out really well and don't be disappointed when it doesn't look quite perfect. This tank is really nice by the way.

Default Update 8/10/07

I've done a lot of replanting in this tank... Pretty much nothing left but orchids now. I thought I'd post a couple of updated pictures. The viv has been seeded with 2 kinds of springtails and 2 kinds of isopods, and I'm planning on adding a pair of imitators in a month or so. I guess the imitators will end up being my first frogs, followed soon after by 4 leucs in my 46 gallon.

Imi's huh? That is going to be our next set in Nov. SnMreptiles should have some by then, although I doubt they will be the only ones!!! My SO has been wanting them for ever, finally we are set on getting them. Seems like We have our hearts set on a particular species and when we see all the different species in person, we end up going with a different kind!! First we wanted Cobalts, but got to the show, and those Amazonicus are just amazing. Then the last show, I was deadset on getting Azureus, and we took home three auratus. Hmmm.
Good luck and Love those Imis!!!
