I have to admit a little bias since I am a teacher, but I'm not feeling the outrage here. The article sounds a little one sided. I'm sure the student wasn't identified because his eyes were red. He was pulled out because he smelt like marijuana and his eyes were red. He is lucky that the school didn't search him, his locker and his car. Most schools would have and have the legal right to do so based on court decsions. In most schools a 3 day suspension is about the minimum. Yes, he had a tough week, but you still can't let a student that you suspect is under the influence be on campus.

Some of this "No Tolerance policy" stuff is so far overboard that there is no way to defend it....

Obviously the individuals "smelling" marijuana had no freaking clue or he would have tested positive. Do teachers now attend training as drug sniffers too?

I'm not a teacher - I actually quit my teaching degree in my senior year and pursued something else for exactly these reasons . . . that and the parents . . .

They need to find a better way to punish students also. Suspension only does more harm to thier education

He certainly could have been with friends who had been smoking pot. It certainly doesn't take any training to smell pot, plus most if not all high school campuses have at least one police officer on campus.
Schools have to error on the side of protecting all the students and their own asses. If they sent him back to class with a reasonable suspicion that he might be high and he accidentally spilled acid on someone in the science lab or fell down the stairs and hurt himself, the school and the administrators that let him go back would be libel, civilly and morally. Like I said before, they obviously felt bad, or they would have searched him, his backpack, his locker and his car, instead of just sending him home.

I don't disagree, but schools are held to a different legal standard than law enforcement.

I agree, some schools are starting to have what they call "In-house suspension" where the students still have to be in school working, but they can't go to class.
My question is, after reading it a couple times, after they sent him home on a 3 day suspension, when he tested negative, did they let him back in? It doesn't directly say. I think that the author wants you to believe that they didn't, but the author also seem to have her own agenda.

school policies are ridiculous, but like others have said, the schools face so many lawsuits that for them its easier to accept as little responsibility as possible and simply make more strict rules and guidelines.

i was in highschool during 9/11 and a good friend was brought to the office for questioning when a teacher noticed he had this megadeath shirt that depicted planes bombing the UN. of course he had nothing to do with the 9/11 attack but they pulled him from class anyway.

heres one where a boy was suspended for having a toy gun that came with a GI joe.
