Default Tallulah Gorge, GA Herping

I recently took a trip with another member to a Tallulah Gorge here in GA. It is a protected gorge and they only let a limited number of visitors into it daily via permit. Apparently there are several rare salamanders that can be found here such as the seepage salamander or green salamander. Also there are some rare plants (Carolina Hemlock) and Lichens. Hope you enjoy the photos.

From the top of the Gorge

Once we got to the bottom we found several pools

All are full of tadpoles

Here are some of the animals we found

This is a spotted salamander we found, could not catch it for a better picture. If you look close you can see the hand.

Some cool bracket fungi

Sphagnum

Interesting plant, was epiphytic and found 40 feet up on a rock from the river.

A cool sliding rock

We were only allowed to go so far into the gorge. This is where we had to stop to climb 1200 feet back out. For perspective those are 60 foot trees by the water.

It is just a day trip, no one is allowed overnight. Depending on how long you explore and swim, it is a good half day adventure. Within a 15 minute drive there are entrances to several nice trails and camp areas that are along other rivers

I beleive the plant is Saxifraga. It's not epiphytic but seems to grow arond the margins of wet areas with little soil--it grows around western North Carolina in the mountains also. I have this same plant growing in a pot in the back yard. I went through Tallulah Gorge 2 weekends ago. If I remember correctly this is where Deliverance with Burt Reynolds was filmed.

This was one of several rivers where Deliverance was filmed. It was also filmed on the Toccoa, Chauga and Chattooga.
