Default Dough as pet?

Ok, this might sound weird but I heard that this was a thing.
Apparently, way back (In the 80's probably) people kept doughs as pets.
I first heard about it on the radio, they talked about pets they had had as kids and one girl mentioned this little dough she used to keep.
I figured that her parent just tricked her into thinking that a dough was a pet so that they wouldn't have to get her a dog but then I asked around a little and several people knew what I was talking about. However, no one knew exactly what it was, other than that you kept it i a bowl and that it grew and could be divided to get more little doughs I know nothing about it.

Does anyone know what this actually was? Perhaps someone had one of these themselves?

I have now found out that it wasn't actually dough, it was something resembling a jelly fish (blobby and somewhat translucent) and it either lived in vinegar or the thing itself smelled of vinegar.

Urg...I've been misled. As it turns out it's a yeast culture used to make a fermented drink.
So not really kept as a pet However, people do grow these just for the sake of growing them, supposedly as a good luck charm or just for "fun".

I'm very disappointed that it wasn't a dough (which would have been a lot funnier) but at least I found out what it is.

I guess you could call a sourdough starter a pet, if you like. You do have to feed it and all...

Haha
Sourdough was actually my first suspect but I figured that people would have remembered that since it's so common. It would make a good candidate for a pet though

This quest for knowledge has given me so much joy, the idea of someone petting a little dough and dragging it around town on a sting makes is so funny it makes me cry

That hit me right in the giggly spot! There's a little part of me that wants to do exactly that, if only so the two of us could chuckle about it.
