Default What exactly is the issue in other hobbies?

I have heard mentioned on this board how we don't want dart frogs to turn into the next snake or gecko hobby. What exactly happened in these hobbies that we are trying to avoid?

-The distancing of the hobby from the connection to the origins of the animal

due IMHO in a big part to...

-The production and commercialization of morphs and hybrids

which reduces the educational and (indirect) conservation value of keeping herptiles in captivity.

Could also mean not overbreeding to avoid surplus frogs that could otherwise deflate their value/worth as what happened to beardies, leopard geckos and cornsnakes

I figured it was to prevent people from making hybrid frogs. And to keep them expensive, lol. I mean let's face it.... They breed pretty easily. And if every average joe had poison dart frogs, it wouldn't be as exotic and amazing as it feels right now!

Could you imagine going to a petco and seeing tincs for 5 bucks a pop?

Well yes, as a matter of fact.. I can. Then most people who buy them will kill them within the month. Or maybe the frogs will hang on a few months until they starve to death because their owners are to lazy to culture flies or to cheap to buy them.

Dart frogs are not expensive .. sometimes they are even free, but responsible care of darts can cost a person some cash.

Petco does have them now, though for about $50 or so. The one near me has had them...with green and black auratus, leucs, and azureus froglets together in the same poorly set-up enclosure. Not cool.
