Default Hurricane Relief

I just got back home this afternoon from spending over a week down in Pascagula, MS. I took my youth group down there to help a few people rebuild their homes. It was hot (mid 90s), we worked hard, and it really opened our eyes to what is going on in the area. A few things I saw/heard:

-In the area we worked in there was 4 feet of water in the main level of their house.
-The 4 feet of water was not considered a flood, but a storm surge, so flood insurance will not pay a dime. This leaves many people without any help in rebuilding.
-It was hard to believe you were still in america. It reminded me of the other countries I have been (Honduras and Jamaica).
-Many, many houses and buildings (including a few casinos in Biloxi, MS) are still either completely leveled or look like nothing had been down since the storm struck
-Everyone we talked to who had hired someone to work on their house had been scammed at least once.
-We never made it to New Orleans, but the people in the area we worked in said it was a ghost town still.

I would just encourage anyone who has any building experience or has some extra time this summer to take a week and go down there and lend a hand in rebuilding the area. If you can't make it down there, there are tons of organizations working down there that really need support (as giving has gone down drastically since the early weeks/months after the storm).

It is sad that after all of the media hype has died down, people forget that there are still many places that have not recovered from the hurricane damage. Here we are going into another hurricane season. I am glad that people are still going down to help. A friend of mine has been down in Mississippi since December helping rebuild homes.
