Default Male Intro to Female Azureus - Immediate Conflict ~ Advice?

I introduced a male Azureus to a female this evening. The male had spent his time with another male (no calling observed) with no female exposure. Likewise - the female had been alone in her tank. The female immediately stared-down the male (she is 25% larger) and 30 seconds later she pursued him, pounced upon him and proceeded to give him a nasty wrestling lesson. The female was buzzing (never heard her do that before) and pursued the male and continued to bully him without let-up.

He was not doing well so I removed him. She remained agitated and bounced all around her tank (unlike her). The humbled male rejoined his former male tankmate and was observed silent calling (1st time) with his sac inflated. The second male soon began to imitate the first.

Here are some pics:

I'm seeking advice from those who have experienced this behavior. It was not courting - it was rough and accompanied by her buzzing as she dominated him. I need to know what to do next as I would like to partner her - but I'm unwilling to have a male injured. What is she up to and where do I go from here?

Thanks,
Alan

Don't take my word alone for it... But I think your hostile female is actually a hostile male. It seems most clear in that first photo, where their front feet are overlapping. Their toes look identical-both very wide.

The first picture shows both front finger pads together, which is a clue. There isn't much difference between the frog on top and the one on the bottom. The other clue would be the buzzing. I don't think lady azureus are vocal. I learned to mistrust blind dates years ago.

On the other hand, I've had some very agressive female imitator ladies, after I separated the ladies into pairs with new fellows. One pair in particular, the well experienced lady jumped the new guy's bones like a nymphomaniac. She scared the hell out of him, and he hid from her for days before he had a clue about what to do about it. I wasn't worried about injuries with these althetic frogs, but it took some time before they got along. She was decidedly the agressor.

Judging from the pictures I'd have to say that it does look like two of the same sex. And anything is possible but I too haven't heard of calling female azureus. Good luck figuring the whole thing out.

Hey bro,
Have you let them watch any preseason games? This could be responsible for the elevated aggression.

Anyways, ya, that one on the top is definately a male.

They look male to me as well. They are some amazing azureus though. You should definetly try to breed them, but like i said i think they are males. usually males dont seem to be that agressive though in my opinion, but anything is possible.

Default males

I agree they may both be males.

I will try to get some photos of boy/girls for you tonight to illustrate.

Nice looking frogs though!

Thanks for your responses. I have sent them to neutral corners to await my instructions. I hope the photos of agression are illuminating for those who haven't observed it.

Default azureus

Male on top, female on bottom

Yours are excellent specimens, but I am guessing 2 males.
