Now granted they seized them because they felt they would be a risk to native wildlife but...

When did african clawed frogs become illegal?

My sister had one a few years ago from a pet store.

It must be a state thing...

Take a look at California's laws for a LONG list of illegal species- including many commonly kept amphibians.

I found the list where Xenopus laevis is illegal. It's about 8-10 states or so. Apparently, they live through anything for an aquatic frog from somewhere I had assumed was a warm place. I guess they tend to eat everything and survive temps down to freezing.

The fungus mentioned in the article is Chytrid. The use of these frogs is the main cause, well initial anyway, of how Chytrid was spread around the world and why so many amphibians are now endangered. Good enough reason to ban the keeping of a certain species as a pet if you ask me. How many pet amphibian owners sterilise waste water from their vivs before pouring it down the sink/drain, etc.?

You can use bleach and then if its a septic system use a dechlorinator before dumping it. This is what I do here with all of the water from my amphibians.

Hmmm. No wonder the Potomac is so screwed up. Snakehead fish and all. :|

Ive never really thought about "cleaning" the waste water untill now.

All of my "wastewater" goes directly to my potted plants. And if I do ivy cuttings in the backyard they get some froggie fertilizer in the bucket. Never dump any. even old tadpole water. But I'm pretty sure there haven't been any amphibians in hoboken since the mid 1800's
sorry to hijack...
