do female phyllobates actually call?

I have heard this from a few people. Not sure if its true, but just wondering.

I have seen my female terribilis call, but more of a response call than an actual call.

My female bicolor calls sometimes when the vivarium is misted or around midnight. She also discharged a large clutch of eggs after her first call, but none of the other bicolor are old enough to fertilze them.

I also have heard this. If anyone could record a female call, it would be cool to examine it, and see the evolutionary significance of female call...

If I can find some time I will try to get them going by playing the calls from my laptop. Last time I did this I had all 3 (1 male and 2 females) going crazy.

funny, the only other frog I know that has a female call is Xenopus laevis. I used to keep those frogs and am well aware of the female's vocalizations. (it is also well documented by researchers).

If both genders call, how do you sex them?

Watch the eggs/sperm squirt out

One reason you rarely see phyllobates sexed pairs for sale...usually when you do, someone is selling their entire collection or downsizing.
The other reason is that some of them take almost 2 years to mature...not many people going to hold onto a frog that long are going to let them go very cheap or often.

The females are also noticeably larger after they are adults... Unless you really have them all fattened up.
