Default How hard is it to find Highland Bronze Auratus?

I have slowly been setting up my vivarium as i have money and time, and all the while i have been keeping my eye out for anyone selling some highland bronze auratus. but i have not seen a single ad. Ideally i would like to get 3 or 4 each from a different supplier. in case they ever breed, i would like to have a healthy line. however, i am concerned that i won't be able to find very many different lines. i am also concerned that there is no chance of finding any at the reptile show in richmond this october. any suggestions about how i should go about finding these guys when my tank is done?

thanks,

-Charlie Q

I commend your effort to not breed direct siblings... But just know that all highland bronze auratus in the North American trade are descendants from just a handful of frogs that Sean Stewart brought in from Europe in 1997. So their isnt a lot of genetic variation, and their is only one line.

I have heard that there are only a hand full of original highland bronze frogs, but just like any genetics, a group interbreeding with itself will lead to certain traits and a different group interbreeding will lead to certain different traits. even if both groups are from the same parents. So getting a set from josh's frogs and one from saurian would seem better than 2 from a single supplier. seems like everyone is out of stock though...

Have you checked with Sean Stewart? His website has them listed as available.

Or just get the closest generation to the original source....if the original breeders are still around....go to that person for offspring. Was Sean the one who brought them into the country?

Ya I believe he was first, actually I think all in our hobby are from his founder stock, but don't quote me on that.

The pop up fairly often. Not to hard to get with a little patience. I'm torn between them and superblues... maybe I'll just get both eventually
