Default Healthy or unhealthy culture?

Is this a culture that is covered with mites, or is this all normal?

And how often do you change the mite paper. I got my roll from Carolina supply.

If I am seeing it correctly, that looks like feces peppering the inside of the cup. Mites tend to be on the move, in my experience but they are about the same size. They are opaque as opposed to mites being a little transparent, too.

When my cultures get that black mold in there that it looks like you have, they aren't usually producing at 100%. Not sure why that's in there, but for me, it was that I was adding yeast and vinegar to a commercial medium that already had the anti-fungal/mold under control without me meddling. When I stopped adding that stuff, I have had much better results and no more black mold. They sure smell better, too... Not sure it's the same stuff I had, but it's possible.

I just switched from Josh's to Ne Herp.

NE Herp does suggest adding both yeast and vinegar. Should I not?

Easy enough to make two cultures, one with and one without (or better, four cultures with all the possible combinations). What works for one person's situation may not work for others'.

The only time I had epic FF failure is when I added yeast per the instructions on the media; now I simply don't add yeast.

Also: I don't use mite paper since I found mites having a barn dance on my fresh paper. Now I put the cxs in a pan of diatomaceous earth.

Actually, that reminds me that I should provide a little context to that part :-) I used to use NE Herp (it was great, I just decided to try something I could get locally rather than having to ship all the time) and that is where I got used to adding vinegar and yeast. I just kept doing it with the new medium, even though the directions didn't say to do so. I have had better luck since starting to follow the directions of my new medium to the letter. So, my situation isn't quite the same as yours.

From your picture, is that a really dense and space-filling wad of excelsior in there? Any chance that is blocking off air flow from the bottom part of the culture? Is the culture in a really humid room? You could also try to cut back a little bit on the amount of water you put in the culture to begin with. If your cultures are producing well, I wouldn't worry about it. As SM said, you can always do some experimentation, too.

Best of luck,

Mark

I'm just going to try another brand.

I saw a you tube video using superfly and the cultures looked amazing.

I found it here for a good price I think

Anyone order from here , or does everyone buy the components separately. ( tops, cups, etc)

After monitoring the temp where I was keeping the fly cultures, I realized the heat went up to 90 at times.

That was likely the cause or all my crashes.

Oh well, have to start over .

Is it safe to let them stay in a container?

Get yourself some proper fabric coated lids. only 50 cents each and I've washed mine with hot water and a scrub pad and gotten 12 years out of them, easy.

Those little hole lids suck for many reasons.

Take a magnifying lens / glass. Mites move all the time. You will easily see them moving.

I would also go along with getting new lids
also I had mildew and other crap on top of my culture
so I added yeast and vinegar as I was also told that it would stop this
which it did work some time but more often than not
best of luck getting this sorted out

I ordered 300 fabric lids from Josh's frogs and they sent me these.
They gave me a full credit, but I don't want to throw away 300 lids.
Seems like a waste

for some reason Josh's is still dealing in those sucky open hole-lids. Why?

You would think Josh's would be better than that.

My local shop gets hydei from them. To which, I introduced mites from them into my home that I have to stay vigilant to keep from forming great populations again. FYI and all...

Do you keep your cultures in a bin with DE at the bottom?
That's supposed to help.

They ship with like a shrink wrapped logo and information on their culture containers. You can’t really tell if they’re mites underneath.

So it was an urgent issue of needing to get a culture until mine were producing as they should.

Could you specify who your local shop gets hydei from? There are a few companies referred to here.

The message I quoted said who it was. Superior shipping solutions or some nonsense.

Sorry, I'm dumb. I didn't know that Superior sold FFs. I thought they only sold dry goods, so I thought you were referring to another vendor.
