Default Epipedobates tricolor ‘Cielito’ (WIKIRI)

Just curious if anyone was able to get ahold of these from the last WIKIRI/U.E. import? I haven’t heard much talk about them around here. Gorgeous frogs.

The first batch is supposed to be coming in the February WIKIRI shipment. There were limited numbers, so not sure how many will be available. I am on the waitlist for 4 of them. They are awesome looking frogs.

I was under the impression that some were sent out in the last U.E. shipment (back in September?), but perhaps not. I am on the wait list as well, though I was told it is rather long.

When I was put on the wait list in August, I asked about availability. I was told the Cielitos would arrive early 2015. That was when Understory expected there next WIKIRI order.

Hey, I received an email from Elaine yesterday. Understory is expecting some Cielitos on March 1st. If everything goes according to plan, I will receive mine by the 6th. I will post some pics when I get them.

Not the best pics, didn't want to disturb them too much. Here are 3 of the 4 I received, one frog is repeated.

They are beautiful little frogs in person. I will update the pics when I move them out of quarantine in about a month. My only regret is not getting more lol.

Very nice! These look like they are well worth the wait. Thanks for sharing - and keep us updated on how they do for you.

Did Elaine happen to say how many they were expecting to get in on this last shipment?

Yeah, so worth the wait. I will keep you updated on how things go. I am finishing up, planting an 18x18x24 exo for them. Waiting to pick up a few orchids at a local show this weekend.

No, Elaine didn't give an exact number. She just said they didn't have many available.

Hey, sorry for the lack of updates. The frogs have been really shy since being moved to their viv. The frogs have been doing well, but head for cover as soon as I get close. Managed to get a couple crappy pics through the glass. Also found a surprise in their water dish today. There are only 2 tads, but it's a start.

A bit of an update, my first F2 froglet was put in a bin last week. I had two, but the second one had spasms and died as I was moving the first one. The good news is I have 15 more tads on the go. The next batch should morph out in a few weeks.

That's too bad about the other little guy, but it sounds like they're just as prolific as the other morphs of tricolor and anthonyi.

I'm setting up a 40 gallon for mine at the moment; I'm just waiting on substrate and glass for the top! Do you have any photos of how you have yours set up?

Yeah, so far they seem to be breeding well. Hopefully the froglet with the spasms was an isolated incident.

I included a pic of the viv before plants and leaf litter to show off the cork.

I picked up my little guys this morning! Absolutely stunning colors; I can't wait to see them mature. All three were out and about as I was leaving. I will try to get some more photos this weekend (and maybe even share some of the 40 gallon that I will be putting them in!).

I think they are still quite young; though, I've been meaning to ask about what age these frogs are.

They are maybe 15mm in length (or a little less) at the moment.

Sounds like the ones that came in (based on your experience and the one other person I've heard from) are very young and small. Unfortunately, the November shipment is being pushed back until 2016 due to several issues with WIKIRI and UE, so for now I'll have to live vicariously through you. Post lots of updates!

I bought it from Understory as Nautilocalyx sp. Venezuela. Although it looks identical to pemphidius, flowers and foliage are the same.

My adults are about an inch long.

Do you have a plant list for your tank? My last few tanks have been Ecuador or Peru "biotopes" and it would be interesting to see what plants others used for theirs.

Why are you selling your 10 gallons epyphyte branch tank? That your biotope tank is perfect, IMO, for the coming froglets of these beautiful tricolor.

Here is the current plant list for the 40 gallon pictured above; some things may get replaced as it all grows in and I do some more research. Obviously it’s not a perfect biotope as some things are being used as stand-in species for ones I can’t locate, and some aren’t necessarily found within the locale…

Asplundia sp. ‘Peru’
Columnea spathulata
Elaphoglossum peltatum
Masdevallia nidifica
Pearcea sp. ‘Ecuador’
Peperomia emarginella ‘Ecuador’
Peperomia cf. eburnea (sp. 'Ecuador')
Peperomia serpens ‘Ecuador’ (small leaf form)
Peperomia sp. ‘Ecuador’
Philodendron verrucosum
Philodendron sp. ‘Peru’
Piper sp. ‘Ecuador’

Ryan, I am curious about your biotopes as well – do you have a link to photos with information on them? What resources do you use to gather information for creating biotopes?

I have been meaning to post a write-up, that helps to cover plant selection pertaining to biotope enclosures, in the plant section, but I wasn’t sure if others would find it helpful as not many people discuss biotope construction.

I haven't gotten anything posted yet, I'm waiting for my E. anthonyi Santa Isabel biotope to grow in a bit more before I post anything up. My Cielito tank got pushed to the backburner after finding out about the delayed shipment. It hasn't been planted yet, but I'm stockpiling lots of cool Ecuadorian plants to use in it.

I typically use a combination of Josh Heath's biotopic plant list that used to be on his (now no longer working) website and Missouri Botanical Garden's Tropicos website. I'll seach for a plant name on that and then look at its distribution. Some plants have very detailed info on where the plant was collected, while others only give a country name. Orchids are much easier, as orchidspecies(dot)com usually has detailed altitude and distribution data.

I think a write up would be very useful. I know there are at least a few people out there that like to go through the trouble of putting together a somewhat biotopic tank for their frogs.

Ryan, Josh's Neotropical plant list is posted here somewhere. I'll find it and "sticky" it in the plant section.

Also, that 40 gallon is going to be amazing as it grows in. It might actually be my favorite biotope you've done.
