Default Spam today

THERE ARE AT LEAST TWO NEW SPAM POSTS FOR TODAY, Nov. 5--one member of DB has already opened one of them.... I sent a PM to Yungster...but we all know that probably won't affect any change....

Hi Judy S,

We're discussing with the mod team on solutions to minimize the spam. If you have any suggestions on fighting this, please PM me.

From what I've seem a lot o these spam posts have links to external sites. I've seen that some boards have a minimum number of posts required before linking to an external site. Perhaps there could also be a "blacklist" of known external spam sites.

So when say mod team you mean Scott, Lou and JP. Everyone else seems to have vanished, unless of coarse they want to sell the latest high end frog.
There was a mod logged in yesterday who hasn`t made a contribution in years.
Cut the friggin advertisements and fix the spam.

I think we have a problem with the "Likes'' feature also.

Haha. I didn't "like" it and can't see it. Speaking of things screwing up, the "shipping tadpoles thread" is a mess. Posts are vanishing. It says Ron was the last to post but it's not there. One of Ed's posts vanished in the sterilizing substrate thread. Also, when I get a notification that someone "liked" a post, when I click on it I get a 404 message.

Something is amiss...The place is falling apart!

Ah ha! I thought my posts were vanishing. I knew I had posted a 'welcome' to a new guy's thread and it was gone the next day. Then there's Judy not being able to read the Tapeworm thread and now other people can't read posts on other threads.

Judy, I don't think it's on your end

The 3 of us would like to see the HUGE spam issue fixed before throwing noob mods at it.

We've made suggestions. Nothing much happening in that regard though. Not like we're not trying though.

The purpose of pursuing the issue of spam..to me at least...is the inadvertent opening the door to malware and other mischief. I am not the most sophisticated user of the internet but even Stevie Wonder can see this problem. Yesterday I ran into a young guy and recommended he sign on to DB, which he did that day..but I should have warned him about this nutso stuff...

Scott, I`m not trying to be a ball buster here (you know me!) but it seem to me other than you 3 mods the others seem to have thrown in the towel, and that's fine. Like I said earlier there was a mod logged in a few days ago who hasn`t done a thing here in probably 3 years. There`s another one who stops by about once a year to make a sarcastic remark and hand out infraction points. My point is, why bother being a mod if you`re done here? Lets get some fresh ones who actually care about what goes on around here.
I need some new blood to give me my infraction points!!

I'm not saying don't pursue spam, but it's pretty much a fact of internet use that spammers exist. And taking the approach of preventing any activity from them, as opposed to just deleting their material and disabling their accounts as they show up, just increases problems.

Scott, correct me if I'm wrong. It's up to the Admin to a fix the problems, right? For a large company that owns multiple forums, I don't "get" how this could be such a major problem. They must have some tech people that can work on this, no?

I thought the top-notch technical service was one of the big selling points:

Well, 'the tech" causes all kinds of additional problems, which you and others have been commenting on. That's because it's just filter technology.

Scott, i've seen you mention you have been frustrated with the impact the tech solution was having on the board, so I'm a little surprised you still think that is still the best route to take.

out of curiosity, is there a reason you still favor that over just recruiting some more mod staff?

Reason being that more mod staffing won't change the amount of spam that we are getting. We've gotten more spam in the last few months then I believe in the last couple of years.

Yes, but it will increase your ability to control it. Remember, filters are not intelligent. The most they can do is remove content that fits a general description. And as we see with recent results, they do not work well in the organic context of human generated discussions (it's just too complex, IMO).

As for the reasons you're likely getting more spam, it's probably due to the sites new accessibility as part of a larger network.

I recall a time when I reported spam posts. Then I watched a moderator come on, browse a few threads, and then leave, without addressing the spam. In fact, I watched this particular moderator do that a few times. So, maybe we don't always know that reporting is effective.

Well it`s pretty clear that reporting it is going nowhere. What I don`t understand is why they`re not even being deleted. I mean I understand keeping the how to get rid of belly fat and mail order brides ad`s.

Please continue reporting. You are our eyes out there and our job would be unmanageable should you not show us the problem areas. Every time a post is reported, all 11 moderators get an email.

The bottom line is that we are aware of the spam problem and we share your frustration.
