Default Leuc breeding temps?

Hey All,

I recently received a pair of standard Leucs and I haven't noticed any breeding behavior. I figure they need some time to adjust to their new surroundings but I was wondering if anyone has any information on optimum breeding conditions. I'm also aware that they tend to be seasonal breeders and rainy season is pretty soon where I am. Also, will males usually call when hearing a call from a different male? Or is it mainly for courting?

Thanks

Males will call when other males call to determine which will be alpha. They will also wrestle during this. Around 70 degrees is a good temperature. Feed a good amount. Also spray heavy on stormy days and they should breed for you. Have patience and disturb them as little as possible.

70F? Mine shut down at those temps...They seem to like it closer to 78-80F.

They're nominal Leucs.

Same here, now that our central air is set lower for summer mine have shut down also. When we keep house a little warmer and temps in my vivs run in upper 70's they breed like rabbits.

Yeah sorry if that was misleading. I have my room around 70 but my lights bring the temps in my vivs up at least 5 degrees.

Thanks for the input. My house is sitting at 72 and with the lights I was thinking that my temps were too high. I still haven't heard any calling and the person I got them from hear him going off before I picked them up. I'm thinking they just need some time to acclimate

My Banded Luecs breed readily with 74-75 nighttime temps, 78-80 daytime temps.

Google a call for luecs, play it from your smartphone near your Viv and your male if you have one will likely respond in seconds.

Hmm one of the first thing I did was play one of the calls to see if I could get a reaction from him and he doesn't seem to be bothered by the call. I've even tried a couple different recordings. The one that's supposed to be female is bigger than the supposed male however she isn't very plump. I was thinking she just isn't producing producing eggs yet but I'm not sure. Both are very healthy, active and readily eat.

Were they a proven pair when you got them? did the person before you at least have eggs laid, tadpoles develop, heard calling of some kind?

There was calling but I don't think this specific pair has laid. They're from a reliable local source however a mistake could have been made. I just want to rule everything out.

How long have you had them? Sometimes they need an adjustment period as you mentioned however; I'm not sure I've had a frog yet that hasn't called (if was calling elsewhere) within a day or two. To be quite honest, I've noticed that most calling males I have acquired usually call within the first few hours of introduction and begin establishing dominance... I always relate this scenario to a guy walking in to a bar, looking around, and calling out "where's all the ladies?"

I've had them for a couple weeks and I didn't expect them to just jump into breeding however I did think I would hear calling especially for the dominance reason. I just did a temp check of the tank and it was running a little high. I did some adjusting and now it pecks at 78. Is it possible that the tank was a little to hot for him to call? It doesn't make much sense to me because they were both very active even with it being a little warm but it's another factor. I'm going to give them a little more time to adjust to the new temp and maybe things will change. I'll post some pics later and maybe someone can help me sex. They are 15 months otw

First pic is the female and second is the male. I just talked to the person I got them from and he witnessed this specific male calling and I believe him. So now I need to make sure everything is 100% and continue to let them settle in. The viv is a 10 gal vert.

What size viv is it? It looks vertically oriented and more suitable for more arboreal species like thumbnails than it does for leucs. I also don't see much for hiding spots and I can't see any leaf litter. While leucs will make use of as much space as possible, it appears that this viv is not very suitable for leucs and not ideal for breeding.

Just saw that you included the size if the viv... I'd recommend a MINIMUM of a 10 gallon that is not horizontally oriented...

This isn't their permanent tank I just needed a place for them until I get my big viv done. It's vertically oriented and they are always climbing the walls and background. I was under the impression that they will use height just as much as horizontal space. There is plenty of leaf litter and the begonia in the back is much more full now for them to hide in. I'm not too worried about breeding at the moment, I'd rather have them set up correctly.

It is true that they will utilize all space given however; leucs need plenty of floor space.

Ok well there's not much I can do about floor space at the moment. Neither seen to be stressed and both are quite bold and eating well so I don't think they're in any danger being in that viv until the other is complete.

It won't be any "danger" for them to have a temporary vertical tank, but don't expect any breeding. If they are trying to get settled in a smaller tank and will then be moved around to a new tank, you won't be giving them a good chance to settle down and get comfortable.
As far as breeding, males will respond well to online calls in my experience and call back frequently. They are pretty seasonal and a bit picky for some people, but once they are happy, they are not hard to breed. Mine typically breed consistently in the spring and summer, when temperatures in their tank are normally about 78 during the days. On hot days their tank may hit 83 F. They seem to like the slightly warmer temps, like pumilio. I would not suggest that you necessarily aim for high temperatures; rather, shoot for 75 and a little warmer will be fine, but too hot can be deadly.
