Thank you,
I found on page 5 (page 1) the rules helped me out alot until I started reading about established tanks. My newest one is 8 months old is that too new? It is old enough for me to feel comfortable putting frogs in, I do normally wait another 4 months, but this one did well with the plants and they are doing great.

I don't think there's any kind of age restriction. So if you've got it, enter it.

Just a question on the rules....

I'm aaaaalmost done with my builld and of course its tropical but its for chameleons....

the rules said "must be tropical and for frogs but does not need to house animals" <--?? is this just in reference to a tank that is in its growout phase before animals are added? so pure terrariums/other animals/etc are not allowed even if the basic build concept/styles are the same or very similar?

The way I interpret that clause is "not a vertical tank for chameleons" and "not a desert setup."

Its a frog site, while I'm sure many respect a nice Chameleon setup I think tropical frog is implied.

You can have a monthly contest without having the viv have to be made that month.

Set up some guidelines (doesnt matter)

Most reef websites do a reef of the month. You can only win that title once with the same display. (If you changed it up, you could win again, its basically the scape that wins.)

Once a month, members submit their images, and the one that gets the most votes wins.

Easy as that.

Of course if you want to have prizes - and sponsors are willing to step up, you can make there be multiple categories. "New Tanks (Less than X months old)" "Old Tanks" "Ripariums" etc

We have discussed this many times... There is not enough interest for a monthly tank contest. Even in this last contest the participation was rather low.

I could care less about winning a prize worth less then 10% of the build costs. I like the competition and trying to come up with new ideas using other peoples builds as inspiration.
Lol your build inspired me! I like the sharp look of the branches!

Default Dendroboard Vivarium Contest

Has the board (Kyle) decided on the future dates/rules etc for the next contest to take place within?

Okay, I've been thinking about this.

First, a previous poster actually stated that one' tank should be able to grow out in two months. This is simply untrue--what bromeliads, aroids, peperomias fill out in only two months?!? The best--i.e., healthiest--set ups are by definition the ones that keep going. If anything, I would think the contest should be for tanks running a minimum of six months.

Second, this galls because my experience with (read avoidance of) judged plant shows, with their terrarium and dish garden displays. To anyone with experience, it is clear that these things were thrown together 1-2 weeks before the show. And what's worse, these bozos actually give classes on how to do this. Um, that's a bouquet of flowers, not a terrarium. Okay, so they'll say that as the plants grow or dies, just replace them. I have tried to explain that the whole point of a terrarium is to recreate a slice of nature that works...

Third, if the contests are to be open to any frog oriented display, might I suggest the following categories?

--best horizontally oriented display;
--best vertically oriented display;
--best display with a permanent water feature;
--best biotope (plants and animals from one zoogeographic region, e.g., Neotropical, Afrotropical, Indo-Malayan, etc.).

Which leads to this question: Kyle, will you accept a vertical display for RETFs? A paludarium for Bombina? And here's the dicey one: A savannah terrarium for toads?

Thanks for your consideration.

Are we allowed to do things we already did? Why not a photo contest? Or I think devin (hydrophyte) did something pretty cool, he created a movie scene out of his viv and it looked awesome! We could do a best background contest of best water feature. Although I really do like the mushroom one... now I just need to figure out how to grow mushrooms

I like the categorized entries. Perhaps you could include one for smaller footprint vivaria, maybe 20 gallon and less, or just 10 gallon?
