Any chance there might be a few categories (size perhaps) or is it "winner takes all? I have a couple 29 gallon bow-fronts I'm pretty proud of, but it would would be hard to compete with some of the whopper vivs I have seen here over the years.

Oh, and thanks for throwing such a fun contest. Even if I don't enter, I know I will enjoy stealing many awesome ideas for my next project.

Im hoping to get the contests a little more regular, my schedule has had months going by without me really realizing it... While the vivarium contests will not be as often I try to mix them in.

Right now I think we can just keep it open to all, maybe with a later contest we can put a limit or range on the size. I can tell you from past contests and pictures I have seen that even smaller vivs can be amazing.

Are we limited to entering one viv only? and are we limited to posting just 1 pic of that viv or each viv to highlight various aspects of it/them?

Basically is it a viv contest, or a viv photo contest?

I would be cool to get the vivs posted into a thread so we can see them all. Maybe even allow public voting? That may be what is planned, but nothing is specified.

I think it would be important also for the age of the viv to posted along with the picture. Anyone can make a schnazzy viv right off the bat with the initial planting but its those that keep looking good long after its been finished that are the really impressive ones.

I agree, but I think these are the ones that will be the front runners. newly mounted plants never look as good as established ones, especially mounted. I won't vote for a viv where I can see fishing line, zip ties or wire keeping plants in place

Frogparty, I have to disagree with you.. I have pic's where you can see whats holding plants in place and they still look 10 times better then some I have seen with nothing holding plants in place. So, I would vote for a set up even if I could see something like that if I thought it was the best one..

To each their own. I love the look of roots. I also like the look of established creepers like ficus or wire vine or microsorum once they have contoured themselves to their support. you just can't fake that kind of look. I am sure if you started with these with long enough stems to wind them around, through etc you could get a great look, but it takes a while for the leaves to all orient towards the light source and fill in. just my opinion. I personally prefer tree fern panels or cork slabs to foam backgrounds. I also tend to prefer vivs that aernt super over planted. many I see here look great, but seem a bit crowded to me. I don't necessarily think a minimalist approach is good either, just looking for that happy medium. Since I used to manage an organic farm and nursery and did a fair bit of landscape design and plant choice, I like to see those aspects of design applied to a viv. I also am partial to broms and orchids while others like pepperomias and begonias. Viva variety!

Congratulations to boogsawaste (jim) for winning the Vivarium contest. He wins a one year TWI Membership.

Here is his description of the tank, and we will get a new post going for the winner.
Quote:
It's a 44 gallon pentagon (corner) tank. It's kind of hard to get good looking pictures of it because of the 3 separate panes in the front (a bow would be worlds better). It was finished initially in September of 08 but I just redid the bottom portion of it by moving some things around and removing some other things. But most of the plants were in there since the beginning and especially the ones growing epiphytically.
