Default Tadpoles having trouble breaking out of egg

Hi, first time clutch of tapotes ever, definitely a newbie. My tinct tadpoles all made it and are now starting to hatch, two so far, but I noticed they are not straight or fully out of the egg and they’ve stopped moving. Should I use some tweezers to gently assist them out of the egg casing or should I leave them to eventually wriggle their way out? Thanks

I would wait it out and see if they can get out by themselves. I don't think I have seen any posts on having to free Tincs from their eggs and have not had to do this myself.

thanks, I saw one blog post about tadpole care that said that if they were having trouble getting out of the egg case they’d assist in the process, but I’ll wait till tomorrow morning to transfer them and in the meantime see if they make it out of the egg

If you haven't already, add a tad (hehe) bit of water around the egg and that should assist them. Not enough to cover the eggs though. Just enough to touch the edges.

they have probably a half cm of water around all the eggs! These are my first tadpoles so I’m probably just being overly nervous and impatient, I had seen videos of tadpoles almost shattering the egg sacks so to see them with just their heads poked out and their tails inside was worrisome to me. I’ll be patient and just let them do their thing 🙂

One of my tads took just over 3 weeks to hatch, it's growing fine and looks healthy. If you search around the site, the recommendation is to not do it as they should have the necessary enzymes that they release to help them get out of the sack. If they don't/can't then that obviously shows that there is something wrong with the tad and so letting it grow and develop and breed just means that you're spreading weak genes in your collection/hobby.

tl:dr recommended not to assist them as they will hatch in their own time.

Not all species easely hatch themselves. I ALWAYS have to help Amereega Hahneli tadpoles out of their clutch. Other frogs I work with don't need this assist tho.

I remember the thread well. And water movement for the tads too. Great contribution to the site.

Tijl's thread on his hahneli made a big difference in the survivability of my A. pepperi 'Abiseo' tads in terms of keeping them in a tank with flowing water and feeding them Hikari wafers, especially. My pepperi, however, don't require any assistance in hatching. None of the frogs I keep require this. It must be a Hahneli thing :-)

Thanks again, Tijl!

OP, any updates? Did the tads finally hatch?

Mark

Interesting.... I wonder what it is that makes it difficult for them to get out and thus needs assistance..?

A dip in blood oxygen levels, can affect emergence vigor in many egg babies, and affects aquatic life energetically in general.

Perhaps sometimes, even a little newbie fear could make them hesitant to make the big break...
