Where have all these frogs gone???

This is a fairly old thread, but I would agree that it seems like Mint terribs don't seem to be as common as I had thought they would be, even now, a couple years after you first mentioned this. That's a shame, too, because they're such a stunning frog.

Things that have always bugged me about the hobby

I enjoyed reading this !!! some good ideas... groups share space in the wild why do we have to isolate them in captivity (not breeding tanks, but just community tanks) and yes Greed can catch all of us. Find the ones you love most and conserve those and make them thrive...less is more? Yeah Ill work on that myself lol

I'm new to the hobby (not yet out of middle school, cut me some slack!) and I had no idea about any of this going on!

I JUST posted on a thread about this no more than an hour before stumbling on your blog. Thanks for pointing that out too. I thought I was going crazy for a second there.

The frustration of this hobby..and my worries about the futchuer

“The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."
    - Socrates (470 - 399 BC)

I taught for 8 years. I can definately see a difference in today's classroom than the classroom I was a part of growing up. I think we owe a lot to the teachings of Doctor Spock. Young people are encouraged to question doctrine and have less respect for authority. Your frustration is very evident. All you can do is teach why things are done the right way.

Where have all these frogs gone???

yeah, I'm always pretty bummed to see "selling collection" in the classifieds, it seems a lot of people get in really quickly and then just dump all their frogs after they realize its more work/money than they expected...

the economy certainly doesn't help either...

Where have all these frogs gone???

Great point Aaron, no one seems to be in this hobby for the long run, too much frenzied buying and selling seems to be a major cause of this.

    Great thread, Brian!

Where have all these frogs gone???

Not to mention there are more morphs out there than qualified breeders. This is where you can have 7k people on this site but they stay for a couple months then they are gone. We can`t keep morphs in the hobby if we can`t keep people in the hobby!

Where have all these frogs gone???

The hobby in general is the reason. Business breed these frogs and have to make money or they dissappear. everyone wants to make money on them and is only buying accordingly. Even though tincs at $25ea can make you more money than pumilio at $300, people don`t want to do the work. This is what happens.
I did the work for 12 years, having extras all the time until no one was buying them anymore. I only have so much space and figured it`s better for me to breed frogs and stay in business rather than to not help at all. While we are trying to save frogs it`s the buyers who decide what sticks around. The perception of me always having them around also drives the thought that they are "established" and then no one wants them.

I agree the tincs are at risk as it seems people are flocking to the newer thumbnails. Im hoping to pickup some more tinc species soon.

I think that's why many of us old curmudgeons have quit posting here, or even lurking. I usually choose to lurk around once in awhile. I prefer spending the time and energy working with my frogs instead of arguing with people looking for a fight. Maybe we need a forum sub-group for curmedgeons, where we can sit around and drink virtual coffee, and talk about how tough things were when we were kids?

While what you say may be true Mark - actually, it is true ... you'll note that there is a difference between some in the "new" generation (say... *you*) and others in the new generation (say... HYBRID!).

Has there ever been a generation who was excited about what their kids generation had to offer? The elders tend to notice all the things that the kids lack, but not what they are capable of. IF they were so useless, you would think that they wouldn't be able to get decent jobs, but time and time again, its the young ones who develop the most innovative new companies.

Kyle - you just contradicted yourself. You said it's not getting worse and then you said it's getting worse (your quote below).

It's getting worse ... just not the curmudgeons (cough) that are getting worse.

"... what we are seeing a increase of is some of the younger crowd who simply have no respect for anything. "
