Default My new azures are not bold at all. But rather shy

I got two new azures at a expo on Oct.14 . I thought they were going to be bold and lively but instead they have been shy and secretive. They always hide under my leaf litter and the other hiding places provided...and i rarely see them eat as i would like to do.....what's going on are they always like this.or do i have to wait for them to be fully grown fir them to be bold and lively??

Post a description and picture(s) of your setup. That may help us ID the problem (if any).

Most pdf's are going to be a bit shy at first. Some will always be shy, most will enbolden over time. Azureus are one that is not too shy as they get used to their new environment. When you feed are they coming out at all ? What are your temps in viv like? Try not to mess with them too much, like hands in viv, poking around, etc. What is the humidity like? How old are they?

When I first got mine I hardly saw them either. I think it takes them a bit to get use to the surroundings as t others have said. I started out with a pretty open tank ( leaf litter, coconut hut & a bark piece). I have since added more plants & I see them a lot more but it has been 6+ months since I bought them.

The humidty is in the upper to mid 80s, and the temperature is about 65 degrees. And there about 3 to 4 months old. I fed them to see if the would come out they diidnt .so i left for about 10 min and when i came back they were feeding and moving around. I approach the tank and they jumped and hid back under some leaf litter.

Raising the tank temps about 5-10 degrees could help. That being said, it'd perfectly normal for younger frogs to be a bit shy, especially in a new environment.

Hey phaze,

I got 2 azureus around the same time you did. Both of mine are equally as shy. The one i havent seen since i put him in there and the other hides under a rock foundation and only comes out an inch or so for food. But as of lately he is coming out a little further and further. I think its just a matter of time.

I suppose if i got picked up in the middle of the night by some strangers and dropped into a enclosure i too would be shy. Especially by other beings watching me eat that are 1000% bigger than me. lol

Give them time, im sure your frogs and mine will become more active and bold.
I did notice that when i increased my temperatures from 65s to 71-74 his viability and poop trails increased. Maybe consider that.

A month and a half should be enough time for an azureus to adjust to a proper setting, though occasionally (with all frogs) some are shyer than others... And to answer your question, they're arguably the most bold pdf around, and would usually eat a fly off your hand at first sight.

As you said, it could just be your presence spooking them up a bit.

I've noticed less time with the lights on really helps my frogs settle in. Bright lights, and people watching their every move, would definitely set them back a bit (IME).

Have you noticed any weight loss or anything other than shyness being weird?

IME, it's often closer to 6 months before frogs really settle into a new environment.

My Azureus are fairly shy too because they are juveniles. I guess they're about 4-5 months old now, and I can see them at least every few days (I check the tanks 2-3 times a day). Usually about 2 minutes after I dump fruit flies in they will attack them, but if I bump the rack or move the lid of the tank, they dive into the plants. I've been to other frogger's setups with many adult tincs and they are extremely bold.

In your case I'd bet they aren't very bold because they are younger.

I have a group of Patricias that I've had for about two months. They're still pretty shy also. They come out to feed then jump right back into the fern to hide. I've been told by some very experienced keepers not to worry as long as they're eating well and not losing weight.

My 2 azureus were shy too when i first got them. They were my first dart frogs and were also juveniles. It turns out that they were male and female (lucky!!). At first they wouldn't come out of the cocohut, but its been over a year now and they became so bold. Once there was a fruit fly on my hand and the male jumped on my hand and ate it. Honestly azureus are awesome frogs.
