Default Questions on Leuc Breeding

For those who have successfully breeded leucs, what is the best day/night temperature range for breeding?

What is the minimum humidity desired?

What is a good day/night temperature range for "dry season" breaks?

I'm getting 2:2 adult leucs next week and monitoring the environment of my 10 gallon breeding tanks. Both pair will be ready to go and I'd like to have their tanks perfect for them.

Thanks!

Jill

For mine, temps aren't all that influential (as long as they are not unhealthy temps). I do a 2 week dry period (no misting) with feeding every few days. I live in humid michigan, so the tank humidity still stays around 75-85 in the open. Then I do a wet period where I misted daily (and sometimes twice a day) and feed every other day or every day. After a week or so of wet season, they usually breed. Remember with Leucs, the males will always be calling no matter how humid it is!

Joshua--

What's your humidity level when you are doing daily mistings for the wet period?

My tank high temps are consistently 80-82 F (my house temp is at 80 so it pretty much is what my house is at) and night time tank lows 75-77 F (outside lows mid-60s). I've played with closing/opening the door (no change), raising the light balast an inch (dropped from 84 to 80) and turning on ceiling fan (didn't lower temp but killed the humidity in the tanks to 70%).

Humidity is maintaining at 80-81% with 1-4 mistings per day and no ceiling fan. It doesn't seem to go up at all with increasing the number of mistings, but will decrease if I don't. Each tank has approx. 10-12 pothos rooted cuttings and either a Nephrolepsis Exaltata in one or Dracaena in the other.

What do you think?

Can't wait to hear the males calling!

Jill

I don't check, but I would guess near 100%.

Jill,

My Leucs have been seasonal breaders. I'm not sure if anything I've done has had any impact on them. For the last three years, they started breeding in the middle of Feb, I get clutches every 10 -14 days or so and then they start slowing down Sept/Oct and by Nov they cease completely. I have varied misting amounts, temps usually run 72-80 in the summer months and 68-75 during winter, humidity is always 80% plus year round.

Thanks,
Tom
