Default Advice for Setting Up First Tank?

I am in the research phase of setting up my first tank. I am fairly sure that leucs are the species I'm gonna go with. I have a twenty gallon tank to work with, and I am wondering about hardy plants, the right lighting, and what sort of misting/lighting systems I might need.

Well lets see:

Yay leucs! Great frogs

Don't need a misting system. Many use hand held bottle sprayers (me included)

For lights, I used the spiral CFLs or the florescent light tubes. The daylight ones. Some folks use high end lighting that I don't know enough about to mention . There are lots of threads on lighting, though, in the construction area.

I fail at plants. There are some great viv plant threads in the plant section. I think a few stickies too.

Keep researching.

Great choice in first frogs! Great size tank!

As mentioned, no 'need' for a misting system. I myself do it by hand so I can look and inspect my tanks.

Plant wise, pathos, philodendron are both great choices for larger frogs. There are some great stickies in the plant section w/ a list longer than anyone willing to type!

welcome to the hobby, and great choices, have fun researching and building the viv.

The above are great plant choices. If you go to Lowe's or Home Depot I recommend looking at low light plants. I try and keep plants that are native to country of the frogs or at least South America.

I like to use a misting system, I use a mistking and have it automated. No you dont need one but if your the type to forget things I would recommend it. What kind of tank are you planning on using? Are you going to use eggcrate for a false bottom or leca/aquarium rocks? Also get the fruit fly culturing thing down before you get frogs. I would also feed leucs hydei when they are older.

Well it looks like the leucs were a good call! Practicing culturing beforehand is a good idea. Is it very hard, or just like raising crickets?
As for my tank, I'm going with a plain twenty gallon tall with a LECA bottom layer.
Thanks for the great plant selections and rescources!

not at all! for me it took about 5 minutes to start a culture, not joking. I just got my varaderos and started a culture by just looking at Josh's frogs youtube video and of course research.
step 1, meusure a half cup of media, dump it in a deli cup
step 2, meusure 2/3 cup of water and dump that in
step 3, use a spoon and mix till there is no dry media left.
step 4, add a ball of either excelcior (sp.) or coffee filters
step 5, add 50 or so flies
and then you wait two weeks and it should be producing!

Just a heads up: amount of water needed in a culture will depend on what media you use, and what part of the country you live in as well. We're in a very dry climate here in CO, and not only does the media we use need more water, but we have to keep them from drying out.

FF culturing is very easy, but it is VERY important to get it down before getting frogs, and there is again, a TON of info here in the forums you can read up on.
