would an inch to inch and a half deep bed of coco fiber and orchid bark suffice for a planting bed? and if i have a false bottom egg-crate do i still need LECA or can i just put the coco fiber and orchid bark mix over the egg-crate and screen?

you don't need leca with a false bottom.

for simplicity's sake, I like to use about 3 or 4 inches of leca (which I already had lying around the house) and some sphagnum on top of that. Then just some dead leaves or pillow moss. Very easy and not as messy as soil.
