Default Questions on false bottom construction

I am currently setting up my first viv. I am planning on using the eggcrate as the false bottom becasue i want to have fish in the tank to. It will be raised about 4 inches from the bottom of the tank. Is there a better idea for this, instead of using eggcrate? Also, planning that i will be using eggcrate is there a good way to hide the edges from being seen from the outside? Im kinda picky, i want it to look as natural as possible and the eggcrate...is ugly! Any info or ideas help!!! Thanks!

you have a lot of options here, you can use gravel to cover the egg crate from teh outside around the edges of the screen or you can place black contact paper on teh out side of it to conceil it or paint the inside of the tank with black epoxy paint, if thi sis yoru first vivarium i woudl opt of doing a Pauladarium, that is my opininion.

What I do to hide the egg crate is cut it just 1/4 shy of each side of the tank, then use another piece of egg crate to create a wall all around it to make sort of a egg crate base with walls, cover that with your choice of material then fill the 1/4 crack around with aquarium gravel....nothing is shown and works great.

the egg crate eliminates the need for the LECA balls, but if you still want to use them for changing the grade or something like that then i guess its sensible to use it. its not necessary to have water in your false bottom, its a bulkhead to keep standing water out of your soil. with that in mind its ok for the water to touch the LECA but not the soil.
