Default Cork Bark Flats/Scrap

Hey guys another question here. I have been looking around for cork bark for back ground and décor. As expected the "pet" shop/trade cork bark appears wildly over priced. I have found a few places that appear to outside the trade that sell rounds, flats and scrap. Would those who have built several or large back grounds with this PM and let me know where they source theirs's. Thanks.

I just bought a bulk order of it from Davis Farms Wholesale Tillandsias. It runs about $4 a pound. There is a $100 minimum since it's wholesale, but it is very nice cork bark with large pieces.

Another place that sells bulk cork is Maryland Cork, I have not ordered from them yet, but heard great things. I am sure others will chime in about them.

Chiming in about Maryland Cork: I haven't ordered from them in a few years, but when I did it was a good product for a good price. No complaints.

I bought some from them after seeing your previous post about it, and was thrilled with what they sent me!

Thanks for the responses everyone. I heard back from Maryland today and am going to go through them. That being said, I have no idea how much cork bark weighs. I was thinking of getting a box of thins and a box of tubes. How may pounds of each should I get for a 24x18x24. My plan is to use it in the back ground combined with Styrofoam and great foam as well as some in the base as well. I obviously want to get enough but don't want to go overboard as well. What do you guys think is a reasonable amount to order?

If I'm not mistaken, I believe you can only get 30lb boxes from Maryland Cork. If you get a box of flats and a box of tubes, you will have PLENTY with a ton left over. You will have enough cork bark to do several vivs that size.

I'm not familiar with their tube sizes, but depending on what your planning on doing, and if you don't want a lot of excess cork left, you can always just order tubes and break them in half to achieve your "flats" and still have your tubes.

With that being said, if you plan on doing more viva, I say go for it. It's so much fun sorting through all the pieces. The more pieces, the bigger selection and allows you to be more picky with your choices.

Thank Moxie. Based on their response it appears that you can order any amount. Here is what they sent me:

Good morning,

It is not possible to order online. To place an order you can contact us at 800-6622675. We do not take online orders because we require your credit card information and our site is not secure.

Thin Flats are $3.45/lb and Tubes are $4.45/lb. There is a box charge of $4.00 each box and shipping is determined by UPS based on the exact weight and zip code. You can order any amount you would like.

We are available M -TH 10-3 for orders. We accept Visa and MasterCard.

Thank you for your inquiry and have a nice day.

A 15 pound box of flats/rounds did 2 complete 36x16x18" full cork mosaic backgrounds for me with pieces leftover and used for additional structure within the tanks (and still some left)
