Where can I buy some "insect paper" to use underneath my cultures. Im going on a mite killing spree.

Edit: And does someone know the scientific name for these little pricks?

off the top of my head, I know Black Jungle carries the paper and Josh's carries a few types of sprays... Check some of the other sponsors too though, I'm sure a couple more have it if you wanna shop around.

hope that helps

You can also buy the avian mite sprays from pet suppliers and simply spray down paper towels.

I actually make my own using the method outlined here.... much more cost effective.

I just use the bird mite spray on newspaper.

And there isn't a specific mite name to give you, as the species involved can vary by where you live and there are a range of different species in general that attack the cultures.

Holy crap thank god I don't have an infestation like that culture in those pictures on that link. I will get some benzyl benzoate from the chemistry lab and some ethanol and spray some newspaper.

I have gotten mite paper from Carolina Biological Supply. I don't think it was to expensive (~$10 +shipping). I think it might be called insecticide self paper or something like that.

It's expensive considering how much more mite paper you can make from old newspapers that you get anyways (or steal from other people before it gets recycled) and a $5-8 bottle of bird spray.

Is it fair to assume that insecticidal shelf paper (bought or homemade) won't kill the fruit flies? Does it give off fumes that do the killing, or does killing only occur via contact?

true, KeroKero

Jer, I believe the insecticidal paper is a contact insecticide, so you shouldn't have to worry about it interfering with your fruit fly or other arthropod colonies.

Also, some non-insecticidal options are Vaseline around the deli cups or keeping your cups in a shallow tray with soap/soapy water or some other viscus liquid in the bottom. The Vaseline cuts the mites down drastically, and the greasy pan almost eliminates them (or at least eliminates their movement between cups, you have to start with a 'clean' colony to keep a clean colony). We used the greasy pan method to keep mite colonies separate in a lab I used to worked in.

Vaseline only adds a new problem to the picture. I used to use it to keep my roaches in their respective bins, but now I would rather have a few escape than get my hands gooped in vaseline and track it all over the place.

Going that route, there is also the idea of sitting cultures in a shallow pan on water with a drop of dish soap to break the water tension (sorry - mentioned already just read the above post again). The paper has been the easiest route for me. Just have to remember to change it regularly, make fresh paper then swap them out (I've also taken to spraying the plastic containers they are in like the directions on the bird spray say but I don't do it often). The paper won't kill the FFs as long as they are in their cultures, but I wouldn't feed off any that ran around on the paper!

The hole sitting in pans of water is only yet again another problem. Im using sprayed paper, hopefully that will keep these bastards down. How often should I change the paper?
