Default A Few Beginner Questions

Well, after several months of lurking around DendroBoard, I am finally ready to make my first post. I've been trying to research vivs and PDFs as much as possible before I started asking questions, but there are a few things that I am still unclear about:

1. Despite the hundreds of posts on vivarium lighting, I am still unsure on what to put on top of my tank. I am building a 25 long (12" deep by 30" long by about 16" tall or so). In terms of plants, I am planning on a very basic selection including broms, ferns, creeping fig, peparomia, pothos perhaps, etc., etc. I am planning on housing a pair (breeding, hopefully) of D. Azureus. I know it isn't optimum tank size, but I am hoping it will work out.

2. I haven't been able to find any information regarding PDF's and moon lighting. I am a saltwater aquarium enthusiast as well, and I know several benefits to having moon lighting in aquariums. I would like to add moonlighting to my Dart Frog setup mainly for aesthetic purposes, but don't know how the frogs will respond. Anyone use moonlighting actively in Dart Frog tanks?

Two is enough for now, I suppose. I appreciate all the information that all of you provide. Thanks in advance for the responses.

1: There are a lot of different methods to doing the lighting, and there are some members on here who are very technical, and knowledgeable about it. On my azureus tank I have the Phillips plant lighting... I believe is 6500K... Its a lot cheaper to go this rout than buying a light from a pet store,,, Having 15 or so marine aquariums myself, I know the cost of lighting, and was amazed at how much less dart frogs were...

2: I have moon lighting on my cobalt tank, don't know of the name of the setup i bought, but its basically 4 blue LEDs in two separate "boxes". I've seen people use computer fans w/ LEDs in them as moon lighting, and as far as I know they only provide aesthetic appeal.

Thanks for your input. I will definitely be going with moonlighting then. Can you perchance give a little more detail on the light fixture you are using? Custom fixture with Phillips bulbs or complete fixture? Also, where did you buy your bulbs?

For that tank and plants, I'd go for a standard 2-tube T8 fixture with inexpensive 6500K or 5000K bulbs. None of those are high light demanding plants, and the vivarium is not so tall that you need the extra light to push to the bottom.

Can I use T12's just as well? I am having a hard time finding something suitable in T8's.

T8's are more efficient and will save you money. But other than that, there should be little noticeable difference.
