One note and one aside:

I have a PE-2, and I like it a lot, it does have one glaring fault to me, however: if the device itself (not the object being measured) strays too far from room temperature, the readings are skewed (in the direction of the device's temp skew). That is when the device gets cold, it gives low readings (I haven't baked the thing to test for sure if it gives hot readings when hot). Ambient temps in the high 50's seem to be enough to give a measurable temperature skew.

As an aside, lasers have a low wattage output (milliwats, usually), but the intensity is fabulously high (this is why they can cause eye damage). Intensity from a diode laser can be in the range of 1-2 kW/sq. m (the solar intensity level at the earth's radial distance in space is 1.3 kW/sq. m).
