Today I bought my first dart frog from LLLReptiles. It's a D. Leucomela, here are some pictures.
Temp= 74F, humidity= 80-85%
I'm going to be adding some drift wood and leaf litter. Once i can find some.
plants
- Pothos
-Bromeliad
-some air plant
-the pink plant, which I forgot its name. Hypo something..
Sorry for the bad pics, I also have a little more planting to do. Going to add some sort of ivy.
I've been in there about 5 times, and your right, for the most part. Never have I seen them mix leucs though, they've always been in they're own tank. They mix most of the other species though.
Add some leaf litter in there as well, darts hate it when dirt gets stuck to their body.
Even if LLLreptile doesn't mix, I know they have a ton of WC animals, both amphibians and reptiles, so it could have been easily transfered.
Lol, I have let the oven catch fire many times. It stays contained though, but I understand your moms concern. You can boil them, and if you don't need to freezing them as well. You should save some of the excess tea, as it makes great water for tads.
I just use the standart 2$ florescent bulbs from wal-mart or Home depot. I have no idea what their wattage is, but any standard florescent bulb will do.
Temps with standart florsecents are about 2F higher than the ambient room temp. Its good that they don't produce a lot of heat because a lot of people use glass tops and they would crack if florescents produced a lot of heat.
Those are my frogs They are quite friendly towards eachother.
Then what lights should I use to heat the tank up like +5F?
The pic is hilarious, I've seen it around before. They look like they have a lot of personality. Are they actually "breeding" in that pic? Or is that just what it looks like?
The two frogs in my avatar are actually both boys, they were in quarentine and I found them like this one day so decided to snap a shot. A lot of treefrogs are some what "communal" and like to hang out on eachother
I just bought a pack of 4 bulbs for $2. It just says, "bright pleasant light", 34 watts. Would this(just a plain old house light) be sufficient for a dart frog?
That should suffice. Generally the bulbs with a bluer or whiter light are better for plants, try to stay away from ones that have a yellow or pink tinge.
Leucs are pretty bold, the leaf litter will just make him feel more secure initially, but probably bolder in the long run Good luck with your little guy.
I just fed him, he doesn't really chase the flies, do they usually? When they're next to him he eats them fast. But there was a few out of his reach and he just watched. So I just kept pouring flies infront of him.
Also, I didn't dust these with calcium. I'm not really sure how, I have the calcium but how do I dust them?
Also, It's "reptile" calcium, the guy at Lllreptile said it would work, is this true?
Some frogs chase flies, some don't. It depends on the frog and how hungery it is. As long as he is eating thats fine.
To dust the flies I usually just use a 16 oz. fruit fly cup with a pinch of powder in it and then tap the flies in. If you don't have a container you can use a bag, but there will probably be more escapes with a bag. Then just "shake and bake."
Do you know what the calcium supplement is called? Rep-cal is one of the better ones for reptiles which also works for amphibs. You will also need a vitiman supplement as well, and Herptivite works well for that. And remember to change out your supplements after 6 months, because after that 6 months they are no good.
Tommorrow I'm going to LLL reptile again. I'm thinking of setting up my other 10 gallon more properly then switching my leuc over to it.
