You are right about Tillandsia being inclined to rot in normal vivarium conditions. Where I have had success with them is right at the top of the back where I tend to have vents. In fact, they are sometimes the only thing that will grow up there because it is so dry. It's a good niche for them. I have no idea how you would get them to grow as a focal specimen in the middle of a tank where they get misted a lot.
I've been able to keep Tillandsias in two of my tanks. Mid way up or higher, on wood or the background. They get misted but seems as long as any water dries fairly quickly, they seem to do fine. I tried them in my latest build and they rotted immediately though. I think air circulation is the key with them. I've never had any success with the ones people give around the holidays in the little glass ornaments. They seem to rot in those also.
