I suppose it would be for people in areas where leaflitter is hard to come by.

You basically want something with high lignin content in particular and cellulose as well.

I've observed brown cardboard to rot fairly slowly. I often take pieces out of my cultures and toss them into my tanks and they don't stand out in the leaflitter.
