Deaths in amplexus have been reported for A. zeteki and A. varius from a number of causes including (but not limited to), malnutrition from being in amplexus for a long time, and infections from lesions on the feet of the female from carrying the male for long periods of time.

If the pair gets trapped under or disoriented inside a crevice or egg deposition site they can drown.

I made the finishing touches to the tank yesterday, after gathering all the information that was given. For the past week, I've managed to keep a 80-84% humidity while keeping it dry too. I have planted Alocasia, Pothos and Philodendron for their big leaves to perch on. Following Corey W's suggestions, I have added two basking area with very big rocks and two ponds with fresh water.

Now in order to maintain clean and fresh water, I have located the ponds under the dripping Exo-Terra Monsoon nozzles. Yes, they drip. Quite a bit. But in this case, it's perfect. It fills the pond and the extra water falls into the substrate beneath the surrounding rocks which remain dry. Once the water is in the drainage area, it will either evaporate or I will siphon it out when I do my weekly cleaning.

For the top, I've cut two pieces of acrylic that are secured on the tank using tape on each extremities where the basking lights will be put on. I have then build a screen mesh and laid another piece of acrylic leaving 1.5'' on each side, for air circulation.

Now they have been in quarantine and treatment since May 2. I will be picking the trio on May 17.

KeroKero set the record straight (if anyone wants to add to this, by all means). We have Atelopus hoogmoedi and not Atelopus spumarius.

Quoting Corey: "Spumarius does not range into the Guyana Shield, all the formerly known as spumarius hoogmoedi and spumarius barbitini are now their own species. Just a case of relatives looking similar."

So here they are. I brought home three from the six we have. We know for sure we have two males. And I am unsure about one. It is larger, it has speckles on the belly, and is larger than the two other toads. It is the first three pictures.

Interestingly too, when I handled the last one (they were only handled while transferred from the carrying case to the tank), the belly went from white to pink/purple pigmentation.
