Default Vampire crabs!!

These are a terrestrial crab out of Sulawesi in Indonesia. They are totally awesome, I just love them. I keep them EXACTLY like I keep frogs so my web page on caring for frogs and building terrariums covers these guys also. They like a water feature in the tank but they don't need one. They eat dusted fruit flies and crickets just like frogs. They'll also eat flake fish food and Hikari Crab Cuisine. Sometimes you'll see what looks like a dead crab in your terrarium but don't worry it's just the molted shell. It looks amazingly like a dead crab but it's not. These things breed like crazy. The mom carries the eggs and baby crabs under the bottom part of her shell until they're ready to be released. You won't even notice this, you'll just see 30 or 40 really small crabs running around the tank! The baby crabs eat the same stuff the parents do, flake fish food and dusted fruit flies. As with all animals I sell, these were born and raised in my own home. Captive born crabs like these do MUCH better than wild caught. You might pay less for wild caught but be ready to have at least half of them die on you. My captive born crabs will all do great for you. These are a very hardy, easy to care for, terrarium addition. The crabs I'm shipping are about half way to adult size, not colored up yet, and I can't sex them. They are 4 or 5 months old and will be breeding for you by 10 or 12 months. They are $30 each or 6 for $150.

You can buy them on my website with paypal or credit card here:

This might sound like a dumb question but can you keep them with frogs?

Brian

I put through an order of 6. I'd like to set them up in a local private school science classroom for a while, and then I'll house them over summer.

If you wouldnt mind posting a full tank shot of a typical terrarium design for them, that would be great.

Thanks

Shawn

Are they the same size as a fiddler? I would think a fiddler would take a PDF if given the chance.

I have seen people over here keeping them with frogs, but these are very large frogs which will move out of the way of the crabs, should the crabs start looking at them as food source.

I'd love to have them but would be worried that smaller frogs may look like food. Has anyone kept them successfully with juvie frogs or thumbnails?

Hi I'm new here but I do know a bit about these. They are not from Salawesi by they way. You say they breed like crazy? I would be honoured if you would pop a log to my site and share this info with the members whom are frequent visitors to main Asian and European crusta forums. I currently have 6 Geosesarma "Bicolor" which are very easily confused with G.Sp "Vampire" as they are virtually identical but will kill each other. Anyway check out vampirecrabs.co.uk it's a fairly new forum run by me specifically for keeping Geosesarma "Vampire Crabs".

G.Sp "Vampire"

Oh Vampires and frogs, is a tricky one and a discussion I myself have been having. G.Sp and darts will probably avoid each other but I'm sure G.Sp would love the constant supply of tadpole ready meals, so maybe not the best idea ever.

I have 6 in a 6g which seems a good amount I started with less but added as they seem to like company and also seem a little more confident in groups however you'll probably get better answers from vampirecrabs.co.uk there's some experience there.

They are not fiddler crabs. Vampire crabs cant open their claws nearly as wide. You guys could try google there is plenty of info out there. I don't think a vampire crabs could eat any frog, but their eggs it may be able to consume. Would I want to find out, not really.

Allen Repashy claims he has done it with several species of frog, lizard, etc.

I think it's probably safe to assume the frogs and the crabs would rather not have the other one around. So I just give each species their own tank.

Agreed, and I wouldn't do it personally either.. just stating that it has allegedly been done (edit- with adult frogs.)

Is there a species of "vampire crab" that shows more color? I want the prettiest ones.. in my opinion, the brighter the purple, the prettier, but that's just me.

I've also seen pictures of blood red and black ones, those are sweet too! I'd love those too!

I am curious... locales... too bad the exporters don't want competition...
