Default Clippings?

So I got my plants today only to realize that I am not very confident in my knowledge of growing from clippings.. should I keep the clipped end submerged in a cup of water until the roots develop or should I just stick them in the soil and keep it saturated?

depends on the type of plant and what conditions they will be grown in

1 is maranta
2 is pellonia
3... hard to tell, aeschenanthus of some sort perhaps

the maranta can be planted as is and you can cut it up if you desire. plant that one in the substrate. it grows terrestrially

the pellonia you couldnt kill if you tried. its a weed IMO cut it wherever and it will undoubtedly propagate just fine

the third i couldnt give any advice on since i cant really ID it..

Some rooting and mounting methods discussed here. Bad Plant Order or Good Deal?

I have pretty good success with most plants by getting them started in a 20L or 10 gal aquarium with a glass lid. I put a drainage layear (usually just eggrate elevated on some kind of spacer (PVC couplings work great). I then put screen over the eggcrate and about 2-3 inches of damp sphagnum moss. I keep the water level just barely touching the bottom of the moss so that it stays moist but isn't undewater. I put the cut end of the plant under a clump of damp moss and keep the enclosure lit for 12 hrs a day with one to two 27-watt CFL Daylight bulbs (one if it's a 10-gal and two if it's a 20L). This method has almost never failed to work for non-epiphytic plants.

You can either establish the plant outside your viv this way and transfer it or its cuttings later, or you can use this method in the viv. For climbing plants, I place them near the background or other vertical structure so they can grow upward.

James is right about the pellonia. It might drop a few leaves at first, but you almost can't kill it. I'm actually considering removing it from a couple of vivs. But it is a really cool plant.

I recommend the link pumilio already posted - we went through a lot of descriptions on how to root plants there. The only thing I can really add is that the last plant is actually Columnea 'Cascading Beauty' or similar (but this is the only one I know of variegated that way).

All of these root easily from the nodes (the Maranta and Columnea nodes are where the leaves meet the stems, the Pellonia will send roots out all along the stem). These are all creepers and would do better just being sit on top of a substrate to root, and I've rooting all of them easily just on top of moist (but not wet) sphagnum, like detailed on the thread.
